10 Crash Video Games Fans Fix
Porting video games from the console version to the PC is something that can’t be taken lightly. This is because PCs have hardware that, although identical, is very diverse and requires checking one by one so that the game can run smoothly without any bugs. Therefore, many developers cannot be 100% successful in doing so.

Of course development problems and deadlines are one of the reasons. However, if it wasn’t right from the start, then it’s clear that they have other problems to deal with.
Luckily, the fans who know programming volunteer or maybe forced? Fix it. They can even solve problems that haven’t been solved for years in just a few days or months.
So, what are the games? Here are 10 broken video games that fans fixed.
10. Far Cry
Series Far Cry the first was not the one we know today although in the end we liked it. The game created by Crytek using the first CryEngine did indeed show various visual display upgrades that did not exist in its time. However, the upgrade does not necessarily come without fault because of the many bugs that appear. This bug allows the enemy’s AI to spot the player from the tent that covers it and shoot directly from the same place.
This bug occurs due to patch 1.4 which was released in 2006 and was not fixed by Crytek or Ubisoft even though it has been protested by many fans. Not wanting to wait, fans then made their own patch which eventually fixed the bug. The patch was finally picked up by Ubisoft and included in the GOG version of the game in 2019. Is it that difficult to fix it? Or are they just lazy to fix it?
9. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
The PC versions of most Japanese games do have bugs that can be considered “nonsense”. This was because Japanese developers at that time did not see the PC market as a potential because of the prevalence of piracy. The result? Most of their game console ports are broken and unkempt. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition be one of them.
Porting the PC version of the game made by FromSoftware, you could say it was badly damaged due to their incompetence in transferring the code. PC version Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition locked at 720p 30fps resolution with keyboard mouse control that is not chaotic.
But a computer science student Peter Thoman or known by his modder name “Durante” managed to fix it in just two days. He released DSFix which released the game framerate lock. Meanwhile, another modder named Iebbers released DSMfix which solved the control problem without the help of FromSoftware.
8. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Back in 2013, Aliens: Colonial Marines release with a variety of problems that make it unfit to be called a video game. The broken AI, the aliens who can’t catch up with the player, and the erratic gunfights make this game completely unplayable. At least not until an Australian modder named TemplarGFX fixes it.
When interviewed with Eurogamer, the modder whose real name is James Dickinson admitted that he doesn’t play video games and only mods. He bought the game and installed it to do his hobby without playing it as a gamer. Through his mod, he managed to fix the above problems and even improve his visual appearance for the better. He can even make Xenomorph more natural, which he thinks occurs due to a code typing error or typo from the programmer.
7. NieR: Automata
Although the release without so many problems, but the PC version NieR: Automata The main problem is the resolution bug where the game can’t display images at the set resolution. For example, 1080p which ends up showing only 900p images that are forced to drag. Another issue is performance even on god PC though. A modder named Kaldaien managed to fix it by creating a small installer that allows to fix both problems. He calls his mod “Special K”.
6. GTA V Online
GTA V it didn’t have so many problems at the time of its release that fans had to fix it. But the multiplayer mode that we know today as GTA Online (I call it GTA V Online) has a loading problem that makes each player have to wait a long time. This apparently happened because the file parser / parser stored in the JSON file was not properly created by Rockstar.
A modder named t0st fixed this with his parser which successfully reduced loading times from about 6 minutes to just 2 minutes on GTA V Online. Knowing this, Rockstar then checked the code and confirmed that they made a mistake. The developer then awarded a t0st in the form of $10,000 which was included in the Rockstar competition prize for players who could find bugs in the game and fix them.
5. Saints Row 2
Released on PC a few months after the console version, Saints Row 2 experienced various problems due to the framerate and bugs that plagued the game. The game was later fixed by a modder named IdolNinja who released Gentlemen of the Row which resolved performance issues.
IdolNinja then continued to update the mod even after GameSpy (IGN’s multiplayer service that was applied to many games at the time) was closed in 2013 which caused a lot of game code to be lost in time. He not only improves the game, but also adds a variety of cosmetic items to cheat codes.
Volition himself admitted that they had found the missing code since GameSpy was shut down and said they would fix it soon in 2019. But until now they have not fixed it at all.
4. Cyberpunk 2077
Let’s take a moment to let go of the haunting console problem Cyberpunk 2077 because even though CD Projekt RED has succeeded in presenting the game without so many bugs on the PC, in reality the ambitious game is still having problems on the PC. Although CD Projekt RED released various patches to improve the game, the sound mixing problem was not resolved.
Oh yes, of course the modder fixed it. Floyd Nexus manually re-edited approximately 800 audio files for a total file size of 11GB and fixed the issue. Without being paid at all other than donations from fans who enjoy the mod.
3. Tales of Zestiria
Ported Tales of Zestiria on PC to be the worst in the history of Bandai Namco’s ported game. In addition to framerate problems, control and various other problems such as not detecting the controller buttons that are connected to the controller, both DS4 and Xbox are problems that must be faced. Unfortunately, Bandai Namco doesn’t want to fix it until this writing is written.
Two modders namely Durante and Kaldaien released their mods to solve this problem. Kaldaien with his Special K which was written with Durante succeeded in making the game more stable with a framerate that was previously locked at 30 fps to 60 fps, widescreen support, changing the controller buttons according to the controller installed, to audio problems that were finally patched by Bandai Namco.
Of course, if you want to play the game well on PC, then their mod is a mandatory thing that needs to be installed, because until now Bandai Namco has not fixed it.
2. Sim City (2013)
Release with disaster is a sentence that can describe Sim City in 2013. This reboot game from the original franchise has always-online DRM which won’t allow players to play it offline or if the server has problems. Super long loading, crashes, and data loss became a common problem at that time.
But a week later, a modder named UKazzer released a patch that would allow players to be able to play the game without these disturbances. EA itself does not want to give a refund and only released an offline patch one year later.
1. Tales of Symphonia
Series Tales seems indeed to be a big problem for Bandai Namco to fix. After previously they had trouble with Zestiria released in 2015, Tales of Symphonia which was released one year later on PC apparently had the same problem.
Locked resolution issue being the biggest in ported version Tales of Symphonia and Durante is back to fixing things that even Bandai Namco’s programmers couldn’t fix. He released a mod called GeDoSaTo which allows players to fix the resolution lock.
The good news, different from Zestiria, Bandai Namco who understand the problems that occur in the game then released their official patch.
It was a broken game that fans finally fixed. Hopefully with these many examples, the developers can mediate the problems of developing and releasing the game. Especially on PC. Because fans should just play it, not help fix it.
