8 Recommended Anime Watches with Video Game Themes

Video Games and Anime are indeed two different segments, but it cannot be denied that these two entertainment media are mutually sustainable as part of pop culture. Many video games are themed or have an Anime-style look, and not a few Anime have a video game theme.

In recent years, many anime have appeared wrapped in video game themes. And many of them tell the story of the protagonist who is thrown into the world of video games, or more popularly called the isekai genre.

Therefore, the author would like to recommend some anime about video games which are definitely fun and amazing for you to watch.

1. No Game No Life

From the title it might sound like a gamer’s motto nop or someone who has no life other than playing video games or watching Anime. And sure enough, because this anime also tells of the NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) duo of brothers named Sora and Shiro who are very good at playing video games.

Adapted directly from Yu Kamiya’s Light Novel, the brothers are invited by the God of Games named Tet, to enter the world of a video game called Disboard which is engulfed in conflict and war between races. And one thing that is interesting is that conflicts and wars in this world are resolved by playing high-stakes games. This of course made Sora and Shiro interested in showing off their gaming skills.

2. Log Horizon

Maybe the only anime title that is really cool when translated into Indonesian; Horizon Travel Records. Log Horizon may be one of several Anime that explains in detail the structure and features that are usually found in MMORPG games, one of the most favorite Anime for writers.

Adapted directly from the Light Novel by Mamare Toumo, Log Horizon tells the story of tens of thousands of players trapped in an MMORPG game called Elder Tale. The main protagonist, Shiroe, together with his party friends try to find a way out of the game and adapt by studying the mechanics of the world that has now become their reality.

3. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Looking at the title above it might sound like an anime with a low quality story that is not interesting. However, it turns out that the anime, which has just aired since October 2018, has a premise of the Isekai genre which is quite unique and different. The author highly recommends this anime.

A direct adaptation of Fuse’s Light Novel, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime tells of a man who is reincarnated after ditujep by a criminal. Instead of becoming a new human, he was reincarnated into another world into a Slime like in a video game. But one thing that is quite interesting is that the Slime’s body has the ability to absorb the power or properties of the creatures and objects it devours.

4. Overlord

In contrast to other Anime which tends to make the protagonist a Hero, in Overlord, the protagonist can be said to have characteristics towards Anti-Hero because of his selfish ambition.

Adapted directly from the Light Novel by Kugane Maruyama, Overlord tells of a DMMORPG game called Yggdrasil which is about to close its server, and one of the players with the nickname Momonga wants to enjoy the last seconds of closing the server. And what happened was that he was trapped in the game, Momonga then took the name Ainz Ooal Gown and went to explore the world of Yggdrasil with his followers (NPC) to find out what really happened.

5. Sword Art Online

Maybe many of you are familiar with this popular Anime. Although technically Sword Art Online is not an Isekai genre, it can’t be denied that this anime popularized the themes of the protagonist being thrown into another world.

Adapted from the Light Novel by Reki Kawahara, Sword Art Online tells the story of thousands of players who are trapped in a VRMMO game also called Sword Art Online, where if the player dies in the game, then he will also die in the real world. The protagonist, Kirito – along with his harem – must struggle to complete 100 levels contained in the game to get out of the game.

The author also highly recommends the film, Sword Art Online Movie: Ordinal Scale, and the spin-off, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online.

6. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Looking at the title above it might sound like a doujin title that you can find on naughty comic sites. Technically, the anime which is also popular with the name DanMachi is more towards the Fantasy genre than Isekai. However, this anime also has several elements that are very closely related to video game settings. And you can expect the Harem cliché which is very thick in this Anime.

Adapted directly from the Light Novel by Fujino Omori, the anime, which is more popularly known as DanMachi, tells the adventures of a man named Bell Cranel and the only member of the Familia of the goddess Hestia. Because this Familia was very poor, Bell had to eradicate the monsters in the dungeon every day to earn money. He continues to grow and encounter new obstacles, as well as meet many people who inspire him.

7. The King’s Avatar

Hearing the word Anime will probably always remind you of Animation made in Japan. But The King’s Avatar is an Anime made from China. Personally, the author himself is not used to voice acting in Chinese (which also sounds awkward in this anime), but this anime has a very interesting premise of video games and esports and has successfully captivated the writer’s heart.

Adapted from Hu Dielan’s Light Novel of the same name, The King’s Avatar tells the story of a professional esports player named Ye Xiu who is very good at the Glory game. But he was forced to quit the team that sheltered him and decided to become an internet cafe operator to survive. While guarding the internet cafe, Ye Xiu continued to play Glory on the new server under the pseudonym Lord Grim. While messing up the game for other players, Ye Xiu met the unique players who developed under him in Glory.

8. The Rising of the Shield Hero

The Rising of the Shield Hero is an anime that has just aired since last January. This anime puts a little emphasis on the word Rising because of the premise of the story that makes the protagonist an Anti-Hero. Maybe this anime is one of the many anime that managed to make the writer feel sympathy for the protagonist.

An adaptation of Aneko Yusagi’s Light Novel, The Rising of the Shield Hero tells of a man named Naofumi Iwatani who is summoned to another world as one of 4 heroes who will face a major disaster. Naofumi earned the title of Shield Hero and wielded the legendary shield, but was not respected and even betrayed by those who summoned him to that world. Hatred overwhelms Naofumi and he decides to go on an adventure alone to develop himself further. And during his journey, Naofumi also meets people who are loyal to him.

Bonus
Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Tells the story of a woman who has just resigned from her job, and decides to relax to enjoy MMO video games. He made a male character or reverse hood, and met a very cute girl character, then became a playmate and even a friend to confide in. But who would have thought that the cute girl was actually played by a handsome man.

The author puts it in a bonus because even though it does have very strong video game elements, in the end this anime leads strongly to the romance genre, where the author himself is not too interested in that genre.

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Konosuba tells the story of a NEET named Kazuma Satou who was hit by a truck, then given the choice by the goddess named Aqua to go to heaven or get a new life in a fantasy world. Choosing a new life in a fantasy world, Kazuma is then assigned to defeat the demon king, and he can ask for any one thing to help with his task. Kazuma chose to bring the goddess Aqua, and it turned out that the goddess was completely useless. Furthermore, the two of them actually lived a mediocre life and things weren’t like what Kazuma had hoped for.

The author includes a bonus because this anime doesn’t show too many video game elements. However, the author still highly recommends this anime because the presentation is very funny and makes the author really entertained by the stupid actions of the characters.

So, from the anime above, which one do you think is the most interesting? Or do you have other Anime recommendations that also have a video game premise and are no less fun to watch? Kuy! Feel free to share your opinion in the comments column!
