Animal Crossing Huge Success, Nintendo Reportedly Lost Interest in Mobile Market

Not only developing games for their consoles, Nintendo also took their time to produce mobile games. But it seems that the sector is slowly being ignored by the company behind Mario and Zelda.

Reporting from Bloomberg, Nintendo is reportedly disappointed with the financial performance that results from the mobile games they release. With the huge success achieved by Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Japanese studio is reportedly refocusing on the production of their new game console – the Nintendo Switch.

Serkan Toto, analyst at Bloomberg, wrote that “after the release of Mario Kart Tour in 2019, Nintendo’s Mobile game plans have been empty”. This means that Nintendo doesn’t have a single mobile game in development so far.

DeNA, a partner in Nintendo’s mobile spinoff game development, also reportedly told investors not to expect any new games until the next Japanese fiscal year (March 31, 2021).

Based on previous reports, Nintendo’s mobile sector reached $1 billion in revenue. The results could well exceed that number, but according to developer partners Nintendo is not very motivated to make income from microtransactions, even asking developers to customize the game so that players can spend less money playing games with their IP.

Nintendo’s return to focus on console gaming is certainly good news for fans. The majority of fans of this Japanese company come from their old consoles and few are interested in the mobile market.
