Ghost of Tsushima Gets Praise from Yakuza Director

Ghost of Tsushima got a pretty interesting reception. Some western media criticized this game because of one aspect, this game set in Japan was produced by a studio that contains white people. While the reception by the Japanese media and gamers was just the opposite, they were amazed to see that western studios were able to create Japanese-style games and even the game became the best-selling new IP to date beating The Last of Us 2.

Toshihiro Nagoshi, director of the Yakuza series, also praised Ghost of Tsushima. Through a livestream from Sega (via Kotaku), he gave some feedback positive about this samurai game.

“Honestly, we [warga Jepang] defeated.” Nagoshi said. “Honestly, I feel like games like that should be made in Japan.” He added, then continued to praise Sucker Punch for representing Japanese culture well and full of research.

He then explained how expressive each character’s movement in the game was. For him that kind of quality had been his target for a long time but he realized that such highly expressive animation took a lot of time and work. The Kurosawa mode added to the game was also praised by Nagoshi for not just being gimmick what makes the game there are black-and-white filters but there are some technical things that make it authentic like classic Japanese movies.

Ghost Of Tsushima AThen Nagoshi talked about the main character in the game. For him Sucker Punch is very brave to make the main character “not look handsome”. According to him, if he or other Japanese studios show character designs like Jin to executives or the marketing team.

“The protagonist [Jin] it’s not really a handsome character, is it? In typical company [Jepang], if you show concept art like him, I don’t think it will be approved.” Obviously Nagoshi. “All their money and game time was spent on middle-aged people like this.” Praise Nagoshi for Sucker Punch’s bravery of a protagonist who is not a ‘cover star’.

There’s still a lot that Nagoshi wants to share about the PS4 exclusive game, but the point is the same, he’s amazed by the incredible Samurai game made by a non-Japanese studio.
