Gods and Monsters Changed Title Due to Trademark Issues with Monster Energy

Previously titled Gods and Monsters, Ubisoft changed the IP title of their new game to Immortals: Fenyx Rising at the Ubisoft Forward conference last week. At the conference, they explained that the name change was due to the new title being a more precise description of the game, but there seems to be another reason behind this name change.

Reporting from documents found by TechRaptor, Ubisoft changed the title of the game because it did not want to conflict with Monster Energy. Not only the drinks, the company has patented several names such as Monster Army and even has a game with the word “Monster” in the title. Monster Energy filed a lawsuit in which they feared consumer confusion would arise between the two unrelated trademarks.

Ubisoft denied this potential, they said that there were hundreds of games with the title “Monster” in it, but not a single consumer complained why the game had nothing to do with the energy drink brand.

Seeing that legal cases can take a long time and cost a lot of money, it seems that Ubisoft prefers to give in and change the title of the game in order to focus on developing the game itself, especially with a release date that is very close. You can watch more about this case in the video from Richard Hoeg below:

Immortals: Fenyx Rising will release on December 3 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, Stadia and PC via the Epic Games Store and Uplay.
