As we know, Chrome is one of the famous web browsers that require a very large amount of RAM when running. So that makes Microsoft need to make a special feature.

Microsoft finally made a feature called Segment Heap. By using this feature, Microsoft claims that the RAM usage on the device drops by 27% when using Edge.

Both Microsoft Edge and Chrome are web browsers that use the same engine called “chromium”. Because of this efficiency, Google finally adopted Chrome for Windows 10 version 2004.

However, now Google has decided to turn off this feature after finding the negative impact of this feature. The negative impact is the increased use of the processor.

In a finding by an Intel engineer, he found that when Chrome uses the Segment Heap, it causes a significant performance drop in benchmarks on PCs with Intel Core i9-9900K processors. CPU performance decreased between 10% to 13%.

“It is common practice to exchange one resource for another. More frequent memory usage increases to reduce CPU usage. In this case it increases CPU usage to reduce memory usage significantly,” wrote a Microsoft employee.

Reducing the impact on the CPU will require “significant changes across the browser codebase”, and the Microsoft Windows team is investigating whether it can improve Segment Heap performance.

“In the short term this is a good trade-off from one resource to another because memory usage is a major issue for browser users,” said the Microsoft employee.

Google plans to roll out this feature in the Chrome update version 85 which will be released in August.
