Halo Server for Xbox 360 Coming to Death in December 2021

Interesting gameplay combined with the background sci-fi which makes the Halo series one of the pioneers of the genre First-Person Shooter. Even the Halo series is often the main reason for many gamers to buy an Xbox console, especially with the Xbox Live service that allows players to play Halo online with friends. This success has also made Halo the most popular online game on the Xbox 360 platform which is still active and quite popular with players. Unfortunately, the experience seems to be coming to an end. 343 Industries as the developer of the Halo series has just announced that it will end the online service for Halo games on the Xbox 360 platform.

Through Halo’s official website, 343 Industries announced that it will close online service in December 2021 for all seven Halo games on the Xbox 360 platform. The seven games include Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo: Spartan Assault, and Halo Wars. The reason why the developers decided to shut down the server is because at the moment they want to save power to keep the rest of the servers stable. In addition, they also want to focus more on developing their newest Halo game, Halo: Infinite, which is planned to be released in 2021.

343 Industries states that there are 4 phases in server shutdown, some of these phases include:

Phase 1 (fall 2019)

  • Transfer of all data from Xbox 360 version of Halo to Halo: Master Chief Collection

Phase 2 (December 2020)

  • Server closure announcement for players
  • Discontinued sale of digital version of Halo Xbox 360 game
  • DLC share for Halo Xbox 360 for free

Phase 3 (2021)

  • Continue to provide warnings and other news regarding server closures to players

Phase 4 (December 2021) *Exact date has not been announced

  • Closing of the Halo online service for Xbox 360.

It should also be noted that this closure does not mean that you can no longer play Halo on Xbox 360, because this server closure only affects some aspects such as Matchmaking, File-Sharing, Challenges etc. For more details, you can see the following scheme.

So, for those of you who might still want to play Halo on Xbox 360 or maybe want to complete Challenges and Achievements, this is the right time before the server shuts down. And for those who don’t have an Xbox 360 console, you can still play the Halo series through the Halo: Master Chief Collection which includes the six main games from the Halo Series. Currently, Halo: Master Chief Collection is available for PC (Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
