[REVIEW] Override: Mech City Brawl Switch - Fight Robots Anywhere and Anytime!

Slowly but surely, the Nintendo Switch is increasingly able to prove its capacity as an attractive hybrid console. Although it can be said to be late to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Switch is still able to attract gamers. One reason for sure? obviously because it is a hybrid that can be a home console as well as a handheld console.

Now that many developers and publishers have looked at the Switch market, they are competing to create new games or porting their old games to the console. One that is quite ambitious targeting the Switch market is Modus Games. The publisher behind the success of the Trine franchise has now spread its wings by opening a new branch in Brazil. And the first step taken by the new branch of Modus Games is to bring their game – Override: Mech City Brawl to Nintendo Switch.

The first time we heard the announcement of the move, we ourselves were quite enthusiastic about the presence of the robot fighting game. It would be interesting, of course, that a robot fighting game that prioritizes local co-op and multiplayer features is now available on a portable console that you can take anywhere. But is it true that our positive expectations paid off sweetly? and is this Switch version more worthy of a glance than the PC, Xbox One, & PlayStation 4 versions? This review will discuss it further.

First, we want to give a direct conclusion to the game which was actually released a year ago.

Excess:

  • Varied multiplayer and co-op modes
  • Combat is simple and easy for anyone to learn
  • Each mecha feels balanced with its own advantages and disadvantages
  • Interesting mecha designs and abilities
  • Various difficulty levels

Lack:

  • Unattractive campaign story
  • Improper lock system
  • Less varied maps
  • Monotonous punch and kick movements and no combo system
  • Campaign mode has repetitive missions

Verdict: 75/100

That is the conclusion of Override: Mech City Brawl that we have played on the PC version. As a ported version, we will discuss the improvements, convenience, performance, and more attractiveness that Game Mode will offer on this Switch version.

In terms of gameplay and content, the Switch version of Override: Mech City Brawl is still the same as the other three release platforms, what makes it different is the opportunity to play it anywhere and anytime handheld. The experience of beating up robots and monsters again in the middle of the city still feels interesting to try again. Moreover, this Switch version comes in versions Super Charged Mega Edition, which contains all the expansions and DLC that have been released previously.

Controls that feel suitable and remain responsive, as well as visuals that are still comfortable to look at are plus points for this ported version. The controls still feel familiar with the console and PC versions, considering that the joy con on the Switch also has many similar buttons. Each inputted action also feels responsive, even though it often suffers from framerate issues, which we will discuss further later.

Unfortunately, our highest expectations of playing this game with both joy con separately turned out to be dashed. Even though it has very simple controls, in fact this Switch version cannot be played in local multiplayer by sharing the two joyjons that are available. To play local multiplayer you have to use a separate joystick or an additional pair of joy cons.

To play local multiplayer an additional pair of joy con or joystick is required.

Of course this is quite disappointing, where at first we hoped to be able to play this game with friends practically anywhere. But unfortunately, a pair of joy cons that can be split into two separate controllers to access local multiplayer mode a la Switch games mostly doesn’t work here.

For a visual appearance, the Switch version is certainly not as beautiful as the PC or PS4 and Xbox One versions. However, it must be admitted, that the visuals are still able to spoil the eye. In terms of effects such as lighting and other small particles, it still looks quite stunning. Each battle is wrapped in a fairly immersive visual presentation, complete with various explosion and destruction effects that still look slick. As proof? You can see a series of screenshots of Override: Mech City Brawl for the Switch version that we have captured throughout this review.

But unfortunately, the switch’s typical framerate issues subscription disease is also approaching this game, where it can’t run stably. This Switch version has indeed been locked at 30 FPS, but we still often encounter disturbances such as FPS drop and stuttering, especially in handheld mode. Sometimes battles that have devastating effects such as explosions and collapsing buildings cause lag to stuttering for a fraction of a second.

It doesn’t make it fall to a level that can’t be played at all, indeed, but this problem is certainly very disturbing to the game experience. Especially for those of you who are very performance demanding and are not strong enough to deal with a framerate of 30 FPS or below.

Conclusion

Override: Mech City the Switch version will present a simple and unique robot battle for those of you who haven’t had the chance to taste it on the PC, PlayStation 4, & Xbox One versions. Launch directly as Super Charged Mega Edition, this Switch version has brought the whole The full DLC that was previously released.

But unfortunately, this Switch version is still far from perfect, some problems such as framerate issues are quite disturbing the game experience. Not to mention the more attraction that we had hoped for in this Switch version was not present. Its potential as a multiplayer game that is fun to play with friends is a bit hampered by the joy con that cannot be divided into two separate controllers.

But if you already have a pair of joy con or additional joysticks, of course this Switch version is the right choice for those of you who want to have fun with friends or family through the local multiplayer mode. The portable version now also allows you to access this simple robot battle anywhere and anytime. It’s really hard right now to buy this game at full price, we would even recommend looking at the Switch version of Override: Mech City at a discount in the future.
