Super Mario 3D All-Stars Removes "So Long, Gay Bowser" Voiceline in Super Mario 64

Hundreds of memes were born from Super Mario 64 and one of them is the scream “So long, gay Bowser” that Mario throws every time he throws Bowser in a boss fight. Mario’s voice actor denied he said “gay Bowser” in the game but “king-a Bowser”, but netizens refused to believe the voice actor’s claim to date.

With the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Nintendo has removed the iconic quote and replaced it with “Buh-bye”. Reporting from Kotaku, this is because Super Mario 3D All-Stars uses Super Mario 64 files Shindou Mr Taiou (version updated Japan) instead of the US version or PAL ROM files that many people play.

When the game was released, Japanese people knew Bowser as “King Kooper”, so to prevent confusion, Nintendo changed the voiceline in the boss fight to “Buh-Bye”. Version Shindou Mr Taiou It has also fixed many glitches that existed in the old version, making the techniques that many speedrunners do can’t be applied in this version. It seems that Nintendo deliberately chose this version because it is the “latest” and most “bug-free” version of all the Super Mario 64 versions available.

The disappearance of “gay Bowser” provoked reactions from many netizens on social media. Of course, this small change doesn’t affect the gameplay at all, but they regret the loss of one of the things that made the game memorable in the hearts of many old gamers.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been released on Nintendo Switch, fans are still expecting Nintendo to release a patch that brings “gay Bowser” back into the game, but it’s unlikely that will happen.
