Rexus Thundervox HX20 Review: Compact Gray Headset

The Rexus Thundervox HX20 is an alternative headset after the HX25 from Rexus by providing several additional features.

The author has previously reviewed the HX25 which is indeed not much different by design from the HX20.

In this review as well, the author will compare the sound quality of the HX20 with the HX25, as well as the HX9 which is also requested by many viewers on YouTube Gamedaim.

Check out the review of the Rexus Thundervox HX20 (hereinafter referred to as the HX20 only) below.

Unboxing Box Rexus HX20

Just like the HX25 and HX9 boxes, the HX20 box takes a gray and white theme for the use of box colors.

On the front shows a product image with some of its superior features on the right and there is a Thundervox Stream logo.

Then on the back of the box explains the specifications and parts of the headset.

The contents of the box include: HX20, detachable microphone, warranty card, and manual.

Comfortable Compact Headset

The HX20 has a 50mm diameter driver with a white ABS plastic body material that feels solid.

What the author likes is the white and gray color theme like the Indonesian high school uniform colors.

The gray color is found on the earpad and headband as well as the cable, microphone, and headset holder or arm.

The HX20 cable is braided measuring 2.1 meters in length with USB connectivity and there is an in-line controller. The USB is already gold-plated so it looks more premium.

The HX20 in-line controller is made of plastic which is quite large in size. On the controller there are 4 buttons for volume, RGB, and microphone (on/off)

Continue to the earpads. The earpads have a synthetic leather layer that is not hard but feels soft and soft when touching the ear.

In diameter, the earpads fit the author’s ears because they are not too oval.

The inner layer is also gray made of thin cloth.

Then the HX20 earcup housing is white where in the middle there is a gray Rexus robot logo.

Personally, the author is not comfortable with the Rexus robot icon, the author prefers the Rexus logo, not the robot icon.

There is RGB but can’t change modes

Around the Rexus icon logo there is also running RGB.

The RGB according to the author matches the logo and not the bottom frame near the earpads, so the RGB doesn’t look too high because it’s too big and the headset looks more minimalist.

Unfortunately on the in-line controller there is only a button to activate or deactivate RGB, there is no RGB mode setting or RGB light level either through the in-line controller or through software.

Then the holder or arm of this headset is gray and not plastic, but made of metal which also feels solid like the earcup housing.

Single Headband with Debossed Logo

Regarding the headband, the HX20 only carries a single headband.

If the author is faced with 2 choices to choose a single or double headband headset, the author will personally choose a headset with a single headband. The reason is because it makes the headset more minimalist and compact.

The HX20’s headband is covered in the same material as the earpads, which is synthetic leather in gray.

The inside of the headband has a little soft foam on the bottom and top. If you touch the front and back of the headband, it will directly touch the hard headband.

At the top of the headband there is a Rexus logo which is debossed and looks quite reflective so it can be detected even though it is debossed. The branding of the logo also seems simple so it doesn’t look too much for headset branding.

Functionally, this headband is adjustable which can adjust the size of the head. The stretch can be quite extreme, almost 180 degrees.

Trying HX20 Software

To set the Rexus HX20 features, we can download dedicated software for this headset through the Rexus website.

Through the software, we can adjust starting from the Equalizer, Effect presets, Microphone, to Virtual 7.1 “

We can adjust the Equalizer section of the sound model and can be applied to each profile.

Enter the Effects section, there are 4 preset effects in the software from Cinemas, Bathroom, Livingroom, to Corridor.

This preset effect is very similar to the software from the NYK Nemesis HS-P18 Banshee headset.

Likewise in the Virtual 7.1 section, the Banshee software with HX20 also has Counterclockwise (CCW) and Clockwise (CW) modes so that virtual 7.1 can move by itself when we play music.

Lastly, there is nothing special about the Mic section because it only changes the amount or gain of the sound pick up from the microphone and ‘Mute’.

Does the HX20 Sound Better Than the HX9 and HX25?

Rexus Thundervox Hx20 Gamedaim Review Comparison

As the author said at the beginning of this review article, the author will compare the sound of the HX20 with the HX9 and HX25.

HX9 has a sound that seems louder than the HX25 when listening to musical instruments other than bass. Meanwhile, the HX25 has a more treble-like sound than the bass, but at least the bass is more pronounced than the HX9. Both are good for listening to enemy steps.

Then what about the HX20?

HX20 sound quality is more intense to the bass. Even when I set the volume to 100%, the bass vibrations will be felt once in the ear.

The sound is perfect for bass lovers.

Rexus Thundervox Hx20 Hotel Comparison California Gamedaim Review

Regarding imaging, the HX20 can clearly position the existing musical instrumental sound. Like when you hear the song Hotel California by Eagles, the headset driver can precisely produce the location of the sound of drums, electric guitars, and other musical instruments.

The sound of the drum being hit by the drummer can be very clearly felt. When the drummer hits the tom drum, the sound can be felt from right to left at 3:54 minutes.

Then the sound of the snare drum is more felt more to the center.

For music, especially imaging and sound stage, I can say that the HX20 driver can produce good sound.

If I compare it with the HX9 and HX25, both headsets can also produce good imaging but not as good as the HX20. Moreover, because the HX20 is more bass, the author personally prefers the sound of the HX20.

How about gaming?

As usual, the author tried playing Apex Legends and CS:GO to test how well this headset can hear enemy steps.

The HX20 is really good for listening to the enemy’s steps because from the start the imaging itself has been good.

For the author, there are no problems for gaming, especially when playing competitive battle-royale or FPS games such as CS:GO, which requires players to hear the enemy’s steps.

In essence, the HX20 is imaging clearer because each instrumental does not overlap each other than the HX25 and HX9. It’s just that for gaming use, all three are equally good for playing games like battle royale or competitive FPS.

In addition, the HX20 is more bass-inclined, unlike the HX25 and HX9, whose bass is still lacking.

Detachable Microphone with Pretty Slick Recording

Rexus Thundervox Hx20 Microphone Gamedaim Review

The HX20 has a detachable microphone, just like the HX25.

The HX20 microphone bar is not hard but flexible which makes the direction really flexible.

When directed, the microphone does not return to its original shape or direction, so we can move it as we wish.

In terms of sound pick-up, this microphone is omnidirectional which means it can pick up sound from all directions.

I tested the microphone via OBS when using a filter and without using a filter and AGC in the Control Panel settings.

The result is that when recording, what the writer notes is the microphone, try not to be too close to the mouth. At least the minimum distance is about the distance of the ring finger from the mouth to the microphone so that the sound of the breath doesn’t get too deep.

And the settings in the Sound Control Panel, set the microphone levels to 70% and activate the AGC.

This is the best setting so that noise is minimal to enter because if the levels are maximum or 100%, the sound noise will be very noticed by the microphone.

The following are the results of recording the HX20 microphone with a filter or without a filter and AGC.

Rexus HX20 Review Conclusion

Rexus Thundervox Hx20 Hands On Gamedaim Review

The author recommends the HX20 for those who like bass sounds compared to the HX25 or HX9.

The HX20 is also imaging-friendly, both listening to music and playing games. When gaming can clearly describe the location of the sound of the opponent’s step.

The sound when listening to music also sounds clear and does not break when the volume setting is high.

Regarding the microphone, the HX20’s microphone does feel better than the HX9 or HX25 because the noise is no more pronounced, especially when setting the gain to 70%.

But the three headsets will actually be even better if you use the High Supression filter in the OBS software when live-streaming or recording.

Of course, when using Discord, because there is already Noise Suppression technology, the noise is minimal. As a result, it’s safe to communicate with friends via Discord.

You can buy HX20 for Rp. 399,000 for a discounted price when this review article is live with the following purchase link.
