Toby Fox Admits Feeling Fear, Guilt and Grateful for Undertale's Popularity

Undertale became one of the biggest surprises in 2015, this one game came suddenly and immediately skyrocketed in popularity by the internet and received a lot of positive criticism because of its unique moral system and funny characters.

Today is the “birthday” of this Earthbound-inspired indie RPG game. The creator of the Undertale game, Toby Fox, wrote of his feelings seeing the game he worked hard for alone for 2.7 years now becoming a success and being loved by millions of players.

“Not only did I not expect to be this popular, but at first, I was scared. I don’t want UNDERTALE to be boring to anyone else, or to be full of spoilers like this before someone else gets a chance to play. At first (maybe this sounds redundant) I tried to contact some let’s players not to play this game.”

Fox has publicly stated that if he is concerned about the popularity of his own game, he feels uncomfortable seeing the game so popular and loved that people who don’t like the game become the object of hatred by the fans.

“But, this one game became very popular. Something that can not be avoided anymore, even, at the time this game reached the peak of its popularity, ‘disliking’ this game seemed like a big sin to the fans. And as a result of this problem, a lot of people are starting to hate the game, making it an endless loop.”

Despite being stressed by the popularity of the game itself, Fox also explained that he is happy to see the game can make people entertain, laugh and happy, especially for those who are having a bad time.

“But at the same time, a lot of amazing things are happening. People tell me that my games help them get through difficult moments in their lives. Others also tell me if this game makes them laugh, or sad, or say ‘I want to get better’. Many small children want to make games or music because of my game. And, for myself, because of this popularity, I can now help myself and others in my life. (And, hopefully, in the future, I can help a lot of other people because of this game too.)”

At the end of his post, he thanked all the fans who have provided support and and everyone who has helped him in making the game. He hopes that one day many children will try to make games that beat his own, just as he tries to make games that beat his favorite games, Cave Story.
