12 Years On, Chie Satonaka Remains The Best Girl in Persona 4
The Persona series can be said to be present as a JRPG game that does not only focus on elements of fighting to eradicate monsters, but also offers social elements in the style of dating sim games which of course have continuity with the battle segmentation.

Persona 3, 4 and 5, are here to highlight their social segmentation, where we can do activities like school children, but also interact with various characters in it, and even have a loving relationship with some of them. The features of these interactions come with the name Social Link.
Talking about Social Link in the Persona game, especially when it comes to female characters who can be dated, of course, almost every player has their own favorite character. In fact, it is not uncommon for heated and intense debates to occur over which woman deserves to hold the title of “best girl” from each Persona.
On this occasion, since Persona 4 Golden suddenly released on PC some time ago, I tried to play it again for reasons of nostalgia, and wanted to remember and reconfirm the reason for my admiration for one of the characters, Chie Satonaka, with my thoughts (it seems already) more mature. After about 3/4 of the way through the game, I’m increasingly convinced that Chie Satonaka deserves to be called the best girl in Persona 4.
Please note that I never played Persona 4 Golden because I didn’t have a PS Vita at the time. But I played the original Persona 4 on PS2 and have finished the game many times. Even then, I actually liked short-haired women, where the obsession started when I played Ridge Racer and saw the figure of Reiko Nagase. This reason, of course, also made me immediately interested in knowing Chie Satonaka more deeply as the game progressed.
However, if the best girl indicator for me is just the appearance of her short hair, then Naoto Shirogane whose hair is even shorter should also be called the best girl. It didn’t stop there, Marie who was present in Persona 4 Golden herself also had short hair, and was even voiced by Kana Hanazawa who often filled in the best girl voices, like Onodera Kosaki for example. you idiot Ichijou Raku, can also bear the title of the best girl. However, even after learning more about Marie’s story, it was Chie who still won my heart 12 years later. There are two main reasons that I think can be agreed and are quite relevant by other players who think that Chie is the best girl in Persona 4.
The first is the character who feels ‘close’ to us. In Persona 4, Chie appears as an ordinary school girl, she is not the daughter of a famous inn owner like Yukiko Amagi, she is not a famous artist like Rise Kujikawa the sorcerer, she is not a genius detective like Naoto, she is not the son of a rich person like Ai Ebihara and he was not Marie whose existence itself could be said to be extremely unusual.
Starting from the beginning of the game, it can be seen that Chie is a very friendly, he offers us as the protagonist to sit next to him after being insulted by the homeroom teacher, then also invites us to go home with Yukiko. For players who are playing for the first time, they may immediately think that Chie is a person who is easy to approach compared to Yukiko who from the start looks so closed or other characters. love-interest others are more complex.
This is also considering that there are some of the other Social Link characters who need a certain social status to interact with them, such as Ai Ebihara who needs high Courage and Naoto who needs high Knowledge. Meanwhile, Chie, who doesn’t need special conditions, certainly feels easier to immediately maximize her Social Link.
The second is the nature and how the Chie character is presented in the game. Being an ordinary school girl would certainly be very boring, but as the story progresses and spend time with Chie, we get to know more about her unique traits, such as liking kung fu movies and fond of eating, especially eating steak. Not only that, Chie is also shown as a supportive person, full of energy and enthusiasm, and gives a positive atmosphere when hanging out with him or hanging out with the investigation team.
Although he tends to be seen as a tomboy throughout the game, occasionally he also shows his female side, such as being afraid of insects, having excessive worries about Yukiko or crying when he thinks the protagonist and Yosuke Hanamura will not return from the TV, afraid of lightning, even still looks elegant and shy when wearing a kimono. These two sides are what make spending time with Chie so interesting, because there is a sense that we want to protect her despite the fact that Chie herself is physically like a bouncer.
It is also undeniable that in fact Chie took the first start in stealing our hearts because they were met at the beginning of the game. So there may be a kind of feeling where we don’t want to betray Chie’s feelings that we have been close to from the start. This indirectly, of course, also makes Naoto, who has just appeared near the end of the game, feel like he has to rush to maximize his Social Link instead of enjoying moments with him slowly.
Some other small things that certainly deserve to be appreciated from Chie are its properties that are well applied to the combat segmentation. He performs kung fu-style attacks from the films he watches, his energetic character can also be seen from him jumping left and right while waiting for his turn to attack. Another thing that makes her also suitable for getting the best girl predicate is that Chie is the only character who can do this instant kill through attack follow-up titled Galactic Punt that he owns.
In the end, my admiration for Chie above is purely my opinion and taste. This also doesn’t mean the other characters are ugly or boring, all Social Link characters present in Persona 4 have their own problems and interesting stories to know more about. If I may name the three favorite girls from Persona 4, then Chie Satonaka is first, followed by Ai Ebihara and ending with Marie.
So, do you agree that Chie Satonaka holds the title of best girl in Persona 4? Or maybe you feel there are other characters who are more worthy of being called the best girl? Come on, just voice your agreement or express your disapproval in the comments column!
