Cory Barlog: I'd Prefer Game Prices Rising Than Stacked With Microtransactions

With 2K Games pegging a price tag of $70 for the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, discussions about the price of AAA games are starting to become a hot topic. Several other publishers began to consider following in the footsteps of 2K Games and of course it provoked negative reactions from gamers, especially at a time when the global economy was deteriorating like now.

Cory Barlog, the director behind God of War, took to Twitter to share his opinion. For him, he prefers the price of AAA games to be increased rather than the game being piled up by microtransactions.

“Games need to go up in price,” Barlog tweeted. “I’d rather raise the price than continue to rely on the microtransaction hell that some games now have.”

Tweets from Barlog responded more positively from gamers. Many are starting to understand that game production, especially for an AAA scale like God of War, takes time and costs that are increasing over time. From the scale of the duration of the game, there may not be a very drastic increase, but from the level of production, there continues to be a rapid increase in each generation, making the costs continue to skyrocket.

The last time the price of games went up was on the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation where the price of games went up from $50 to $60. We’ll see if the next generation of PS5 and Xbox Series X will be the generation where the price of games goes up again.
