Dev. Nintendo Bans Paper Mario from Creating New Characters Related to Mario World

Since the release of Paper Mario: Sticker Star, fans have begun to feel that the spin-off franchise of the Nintendo mascot character is no longer as unique as it used to be. Not only because of the simplified RPG system, but also the absence of original characters from the developer. Even in the newest series, Paper Mario: The Origami King, games only use design basic from existing Mario characters with slight modifications that make them different from other NPCs. It seems that the reason why this happened was revealed through an interview from one of the developers.

Reporting from VGC, Kensuke Tanabe, a veteran developer of the Super Mario franchise since 1988, said that Nintendo had strict restrictions on creating new characters or even modifying existing characters in the game. universe Mario. Apart from boss characters or characters that are important with the game’s theme, developers are prohibited from building new characters and must take advantage of what Nintendo has created.

“Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify or create new original characters related to the Mario world.” Said Tanabe. “This means that if we don’t use the Mario character to [pertarungang] boss, we just need to create original characters with designs that have nothing to do with the Mario world, for example, Olly and several stationery themed bosses in the game.”

This strict restriction explains why the new Paper Mario games after Super Paper Mario are no longer filled with new characters like Mr. L, Gombella, Koops, and others. The ban on creating new characters gave mixed reactions from developers, on the one hand they were disappointed that they couldn’t create characters party new ones that will accompany Mario’s adventures, but on the other hand this limitation gives rise to various unique and funny ideas that can be implemented into the game. The latest example is the hundreds of Toads in Origami King, all of them are Toads but with different colors, but each of them has their own characteristics, making it difficult for players to find the same Toad in each new location.

This is a strange decision from Nintendo. If the previous games didn’t mind having an “OC character” in the spin-off game and the character was even a new fan favorite, why did they suddenly ban it now? Limiting developer creativity will have a big impact on world-building and narrative aspects. We’ll see if those rules change after the release of the new Paper Mario that just rolled out yesterday.
