Fall Guys Used To Be Shown To 10 Publishers, Only Digital Devolver Wants To Fund Project

A few weeks after its release, Fall Guys managed to become the most popular game of the month. Fun gameplay and cute artsyle are a small part of why this game from Mediatonic “explodes” its popularity.

We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.

Each successful game has its own story, and Fall Guys is also one of them. Jeff Tanton, creative director of Mediatonic, shares what happened before the release of this unique battle-royale game and what “revisions” of ideas took place during development.

There is a full thread discussing this topic, but there are several things that have become the center of attention, one of which is that Tanton’s story about the game has been shown to 10 publishers at GDC 2018, but only one company is willing to accept the game concept, namely Devolver Digital. After receiving an injection of funds, the development process only started 6 months later.

The reason why the Fall Guys concept was rejected by other publishers is because of the genre battle royale has become an “oversaturated” genre and is dominated by big games like Fortnite, PUBG and COD: Warzone. Making the current battle-royale game seem to be “late trend” and most likely lose competitiveness.

Fall Guys previously supported 100 players like any other battle-royale game. But the number of players was reduced to 60 for a number of reasons, one of which was because the game became too “chaotic” and unpleasant for such a large number of players.

Before setting the title “Fall Guys”, the previous game was named Fool’s Gauntlet and also Stumble Chums. But after several revisions, the game finally got the title and cute “peanut” artstyle that we have today.

For those of you who want to know more about the development of this battle-royale game mixed with Takeshi Fort, you can check it out directly in the collection of tweets made by Jeff Tanton.

Fall Guys is now the most successful game released by Devolver Digital. The game sold 2 million copies last week and that number continues to grow. Fall Guys is currently only released for PS4 and PC, but with such high interest, it’s highly likely that the game will follow on other platforms like Xbox One and Switch.
