Financial problems have plagued Starbreeze in the past year. The decline in game sales and the Overkill’s The Walking Dead project which failed miserably both in reception and commercially, forced the studio to undertake reconstruction in December 2018. Unfortunately, their actions have not been enough to stabilize their finances.

Reporting from MCV, CEO Mikael Nermark admits that the studio he leads is indeed in a very bad position at the moment. Through their Q1 2019 financial report, Starbreeze was concluded to have suffered a loss of up to 122,773 Krona or around $12.8 thousand. For a company the size of Starbreeze, of course, this is a very bad number.

Through the financial report, the CEO also acknowledged that Starbreeze currently does not have sufficient funds to guarantee it can operate for the next 12 months and is also expected to have a liquidity shortage in mid-2019. These two conditions are a bad indication if they are in a position of uncertainty whether they can continue to do business in the long term.

Of course, the task of Nermark now is to find sources of funds to finance the company’s operations not only in the next 12 months but in the long term. By relying on Payday as their only hope, he hopes to use their most valuable asset to save the future of the studio.

Payday 3 has not received any confirmation at all from Starbreeze or Overkill. Will this financial problem affect the pace of development of the game, and will the third game really save Starbreeze from going out of business in the future? We will see later.
