Flooded with Negative Criticism, Id Software Will Release Denuvo Anti-Cheat on Doom Eternal
Last week, Doom Eternal got its first major update. Apart from the new content that the game added, the addition of the Denuvo anti-cheat was the main highlight of the update. Functioning to protect the game from cheat programs, which is a good thing, the developers have been inundated with negative criticism from Denuvo’s new anti-cheat implementation.

Running at the kernel level which means programs run at the highest level in the OS, many players claim that this anti-cheat brings more problems than positives to the game. Even some antivirus programs detect anti-cheat from Denuvo as malware due to the nature of its operation.
Many have reported that FPS performance has fallen drastically, games are difficult to run, vulnerable crash, and various other technical issues occurred after the update was released. Even if these problems do not occur, many feel insecure with third-party programs running at the kernel level and also the potential for privacy and security problems on PCs that can occur if the program fails.
Seeing the protests and criticism that spread after the addition of the anti-cheat, ID Software decided that the anti-cheat program will be withdrawn next week. This was confirmed by Marty Stratton, producer of Id Software, via Reddit.
Through the subreddit, Stratton explained that the addition of the anti-cheat was actually well-intentioned, namely to provide a cheat-free online gaming experience. But he realized that the program was causing a lot of unexpected problems. Many players reported various stability and technical issues occurring after the update. Therefore, they will release anti-cheat even though it has not been used for a month.
Stratton also wants to ensure his community that the implementation of the Denuvo anti-cheat is their own decision, not Bethesda’s. Previously many speculated that they were forced by the parent company to add anti-cheats.
Denuvo anti-cheat will be released in the next update. There is no definite date yet, but Stratton hopes it can be done within the next week.
