If you move, you die.

Getting out of your comfort zone might be the right word for Koei Tecmo. The studio that has most often made games based on ancient wars either through Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, to sensual fighting games Dead or Alive is now trying new things by plunging into the horror genre.

Reported by Japan’s Famitsu weekly magazine, Koei Tecmo’s internal developer, Koei Tecmo Wave announced that they have finished completing a VR game titled Horror Sense: Daruma-san ga Koronda. This game adopts the traditional Japanese game “Daruma-san ga Koronda” with a VR horror sensation in an old Japanese school building.

For those of you who don’t know, this game is a game where one player has to be the target person and several other players have to be “daruma-san” (taken from the puppet of Bodhidharma, founder of the Zen Buddhist sect) and approach him. The target player will shout “daruma-san ga koronda” (a fallen daruma doll) and look back, at the same time other players must approach the target and must stop after the target looks back after saying the sentence.

The school building which is the setting has its own horror story. It is told that one day a female teacher who has a child is heartbroken, after an accident took her son’s life. A few days after the incident, the female teacher saw two children playing “daruma-san ga koronda” inside the school building. Suddenly envy and jealousy appeared in his mind. Desperate, he then went into the school building and killed the two children. He then followed him by killing himself.

The story becomes a horror legend, where anyone who dares to enter the old building will be invited to play “daruma-san ga koronda” by the ghost inside, and he will be forced to become daruma-san.

Several decades later, a video appeared on the forum showing a young man testing his mettle in the old school building. Unfortunately, in the middle of the recording the camera battery that was used actually ran out and the video was cut off there. Coincidentally, the video was found by one of the game characters who live near the building, Kenta (Yuuki Kenta) who then invites you and his three best friends, Yuu (Toujou Yuutarou), Sayuri (Tachibana Sayuri), and Mari (Nanase Mari) to visit the school. This is where your game starts.

From left to right: Yuuki Kenta (Kenta), Toujou Yuutarou (Yuuta), Tachibana Sayuri (Sayuri), and Nanase Mari (Mari). While the picture below is two ghosts of children who are your enemies.

You will play in an old school building which will contain the ghosts of two boys and girls who have been killed by the female teacher. Like a legend, you will be invited to play daruma-san ga koronda. After he shouts the word “daruma-san ga koronda” you have to approach him by pressing the square / circle / triangle button. If you move after the ghost looks back, you are guaranteed to die.

Teacher’s ghost? Is it possible that it will appear in hard mode?
Don’t be fooled by the trap. A little movement, then you will die.

This game has three difficulty levels/modes: Beginning (Ghost girl), Continuation (Ghost boy), Hard (Ghost). Each difficulty level will have its own tricks, but clearly, the ghost’s face will change shape every time you get closer to a scary shape. Famitsu who has tried it said that the hard difficulty level will have different horror sensations, could it be that the teacher’s ghost is also included in it?

Horror Sense: Daruma-san ga Koronda is currently in the works and ready to be released in Japan on January 25, 2019 exclusively for PlayStation VR. Could it be that Koei Tecmo managed to bring out the feel of the creepy horror from its newest game? You can follow the story via the following link.
