One Piece Pirate Warrior 4 Indonesia Review, Minor Problems Behind the Brutal Leap

One Piece Pirate Warrior 4 is an adaptation of the anime and comic series by Eiichiro Oda. This game itself has the Musou genre, aka Dynasty Warrior. For those of you who don’t know what Musou is or have never played Dynasty Warrior at all, this genre is another form of Hack n Slash game but with hundreds of times more enemies and there are many characters that you can use.

“Disclaimer: Please note that we got this copy review from Bandai Namco, but they did not direct us so this opinion is based on playing experience.”

Having previously released an Open World genre One Piece game which turned out to be far from expectations, the role of Pirate Warrior 4 is arguably quite heavy to improve the player’s image of the existing One Piece games. However, with the success of the One Piece game in the Pirate Warriors series, it can be said that the Musou genre is indeed very suitable for One Piece games. Hopefully this review can help you to determine if this game will take up your time for some time to come.

Not Revolutionary, But Steady Improvement

The Musou genre can be said to be similar to one another, because that’s how modern Musou games are today. The same thing can be felt in this 4th series Pirate Warriors game, you are still presented with hundreds to thousands of enemies in sight, capture certain locations, and most importantly must be in the right place at the right time. But of course this is not a negative thing, because Pirate Warriors 4 itself actually increases the gameplay elements in Pirate Warrior 3 so that the gameplay feels even more enjoyable in this latest series.

  1. Amazing Special Move Shortcut

This element is the newest feature in this game, briefly this feature is a form of assistance for players to execute the moves in the game. However, in the in-game scenario, this feature becomes the player’s ultimate tool to finish off the enemy using the ultimate move. Because basically this feature replaces the usual Musou Bar in Musou games.

As a way to activate full burst aka critical mode, transformation mode, and execute moves that are not in the standard move set. The presence of this feature is a breath of fresh air for Pirate Warriors players, because this feature allows many players to create what moves they can execute according to their preferences. Still the same as the Musou Bar, how to fill the Special Move gauge is that you have to hit the enemies in front of you.

  • Airborne Mechanisms For You Hack n Slash Lovers

Although it is still similar to the hack n slash genre, the Musou genre is not too serious about the airborne mechanism, but something different is actually present in One Piece Warrior 4. By default you only need to fly minions or bosses into the air using your combo, in Pirate Warriors 4 press the button. jumping after casting the move set will make the enemy bounce into the air (if in a state of break for the boss). But the key to the Airborne mechanism is how we can keep the enemy in the air for a long time, or at least we can keep throwing combos without falling.

Pirate Warriors 4 itself changes the Dash feature, which is usually only to speed up mobility and avoid enemy attacks, into a mechanism to continue to fly the enemy. You can continue to fly enemies with just a dash after you complete a combo line, repeating it over and over again makes the airborne feel solid.

The drawback is that there is no special reward for those of us who successfully launch this mechanism. Enemies can both return to un-break mode (full armor), there are no additional rewards other than achievements.
  • Armor State Mechanism, As well as Character Type

The Musou genre often feels monotonous, how only certain characters have significant differences and fighting bosses doesn’t feel that different. This tricky thing seems to be trying to be changed by Pirate Warrior 4 by presenting an Armor State or full armor state, where each boss has its own armor bar that you need to spend to reach break mode, so you can reduce the boss’s life effectively. Because as long as the boss armor is still left, the enemy’s life will be difficult to reduce.

The development of this mechanism also turns out to be synchronized with the types of each character. where is power/speed/technique/air Type where each has its advantages and different playing styles. An example of synergy is, Ussop who has a technique type will very quickly finish off the boss armor, but he will find it difficult to reduce the boss’s life.
  • There is no more Gacha Coin like the previous seriesOne of the improvements in the series this time is that the coins used to upgrade each character now don’t need to be grinding again with the rng method. You can get it by completing special stages in Treasure mode, even just playing with certain characters can also reward you with character coins.
Many stories are skipped, so a bit confused

One thing that is quite regrettable is the many arcs in the One Piece story which are actually crucial but were cut to shorten the story in this game. Not infrequently we are confused why this arc was chosen while the arc was missed. Submission of the story in this game can be divided into 3 ways, 1. Comic style cutscene, 2. Game Cutscene with Dialogue, 3. Action cutscenes. Of these three methods personally, the 3rd method is the least successful in capturing the story in One Piece itself, apart from the fact that this method looks cool, the character’s expression and mouth movements are more acceptable.

There is 5 arc or a large chapter in the One Piece Pirate Warrior 4 game, where each arc has more than one story stage. This causes a lot of story cuts in other arcs, so that some of the stories that should be told in the Anime and Manga versions are only told in a super duper short way through highlights. As a result the story becomes a little bit unreasonable. The story of this game itself starts from Arabasta, continues to New World, even to the latest story, namely the land of Wano. Even so the story on Wano itself is considered an Original Game, aka made specifically for the game and does not follow the story in the Manga or Anime.

Troubled Camera and Locking

The camera on One Piece Pirate Warrior 4 is indeed a little strange, almost all of its movements need to be rotated manually. But the main problem in this game is that when you fight the Boss in each story, the lock system for this boss is very often released for no reason. You will often lose the location of the boss when fighting, many times you have to press the button to re-lock the boss, which is quite annoying. But this problem can certainly be fixed with a special hotfix patch.

The Online System Design is Quite Weird

We ourselves played One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 on PS4, there were a lot of connection problems that we experienced while playing this game. As reported by some of our colleagues who find it difficult to invite their own friends. One of the main problems that occurs is when you enter a person session, and say you are at the end of a mission so there is only one more boss you need to beat. At that time your connection is interrupted, so you need to repeat the stage from the beginning again, this is quite disturbing, especially those of you who have to play with random people.

There was an oddity that we encountered during our review of this game, where the online co-op feature that was implemented turned out to be not full real time. You’ll be fighting bosses who seem to be in different locations, though the reduced lives will accumulate and still feel like a co-op game. This happens probably to reduce lag when playing Co-op, or at least that’s how we felt when playing on PS4.

Beautiful Stage That Makes You Not Bored

The beauty of the world of One Piece itself is actually a good start for the stage in the game Pirate Warrior 4. The success of developers is judged by their imagination when replicating the world of One Piece itself. Super unique stages such as Water 7, Big Mom’s house, to the Kingdom of Wano are quite replicated according to important locations in the story. Those of you who are fans of One Piece will find it easy to say which location this is. In some scenarios there are even maps that present obstacles to complicate the movement, this is quite appreciated because you could say the Musou genre will feel very repetitive if the variety of maps is minimal.

You Can Destroy Buildings and Objects

One of the most appreciated features of Pirate Warrior 4 is the interaction in the world. Where to destroy one or two objects, it is indeed a feature that is common in previous Musou games, but in Pirate Warrior 4, you can destroy various forms of housing, trees, to several buildings. This feels very interesting coupled with the presence of Giant hero types such as 4 Yonko. This feature makes this game feel very destructive, sounds simple indeed, but you will be surprised by how many buildings you can destroy in the game.

Conclusion

Behind the minor problems in this game, such as connection, camera locking system, which can be fixed with patches or quite annoying such as cutting the story, overall this game feels very solid. Improved features such as special moves, armor state variations, and more serious character types make this game less monotonous and rewarding for increasing many characters. Your ability to destroy many objects like Houses makes a giant character like 4 Yonko feel very destructive and cool.

Beautiful stage design with detailed missions on each stage, and the loss of the gacha mechanism to collect coins makes this game feel much better than the previous series. You fans of Pirate Warriors 4 or connoisseurs of the One Piece series will be highly recommended to play this, even those of you who like the Musou genre will also easily like it. But for those who are not between the two categories, you don’t need to be afraid to try this game if you want to taste what a Musou game feels like. It should be noted that the story in this game will be a little unreasonable for those of you who are not connoisseurs of the One Piece series.

With the release of the Pirate Warrior 4 series, you can say Bandai Namco is playing it safe. However, seeing this game executed well in terms of gameplay, made fans who were disappointed with World Seeker could be quiet for a while and enjoy this one game.
