PS5 Consoles Have Lowest Sales Level in Japan?

Since the PS5 was officially released on November 12, 2020 in Japan, the Sony Playstation has received a lot of sharp criticism from analysts and fans in the country. They allege that the Sony Playstation puts Japanese gamers at the back of the list. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, also denied this accusation. He stated that “Japan is still very important” for the company.

However, reality says otherwise. Recently the PS5 has had the lowest sales rate in Japan. This is evident from the latest statistics on PS5 sales in Japan, sourced from an article in the Japanese edition of gameindustry.biz. About six weeks after the launch, it turned out that only about 240,000 units of the PS5 were launched in Japan. The article has stated that if the current buying rate continues, the total sales of the PS5 will only be equivalent to half that of the PS4 or even less. And that analysis is valid for the next few years.

If we look at the graph above, we can see that PS5 sales are even smaller than the previous consoles, namely the PSP, PS3, VITA and PS4. However, if we look at the comparison between Nintendo and Playstation on the chart, of course, Playstation products have sales. lower than Nintendo itself. Even Nintendo’s products occupy the largest sales of the market. Well, this might be the reason why Sony Playstation doesn’t pay much attention to the market in Japan.

In addition, rumors of a change in the confirmation button on the PS5 allegedly also affected. As we know, Japanese games usually use the O button as the accept button. However, the PS5 instead plans to unify all the accept buttons on the X button like in the western version.

Where of course the Japanese gamers seem quite objected to it. Apart from the habit factor, O or “maru” has the meaning “true”, usually used to confirm something they think is “yes”. While X itself refers to the word “Batsu” which means wrong. And in their culture, it is also used to say “no” or “cancel”.
