PUBG Will Not Apply Region-Lock for Chinese Players
PUBG Corp. will not provide region lock for Chinese players.
One month has passed since the release of version 1.0 PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or better known as PUBG. Although the license has been held by Tencent for release in China and there has been a lot of controversy, including a new cheat that just appeared yesterday, it looks like this game will not get region-locked for players in the bamboo curtain country. The good news, the developer is now preparing something to limit it.

ICYMI on our dev blog in December, we announced we’re working to create a system that will provide a fair gameplay experience for all players. These systems take time to build & implement on the servers without major issues, so please bear with us!https://t.co/oxmuka5OZt pic.twitter.com/yIgjxcEUrD

Through his personal Twitter account, the creator PUBG Brendan Greene said that they are currently working on a system to separate players by ping difference. This is a response to the many complaints about the game’s cheaters, most of which come from China. This is reinforced by a report on the BattleEye anti-cheat system, which says that “most” of the game’s cheaters do come from bamboo curtain countries.
We are currently banning at a rate of 6K-13K per day, nearly 20K within the last 24 hours alone. The vast majority is from China.

However, Greene doesn’t think that region-locking is the solution. “Applying region-lock is not a good idea. Yes, the majority of cheats come from China, but that doesn’t necessarily make all Chinese players cheaters. Just because you find some bad things from that country, then blocking all countries I think is a bit too reactive.” he told Kotaku last December.
The system that Greene is developing can be represented by the implementation of a light version of “region-lock”. Because he wrote that a player with a ping higher than the average ping of his country of residence, will not be able to connect or meet other players. How about you? Does the whole country of China deserve a version block PUBG now that they’ve got it from Tencent, or wait for the ping system that Greene is working on?
