Teens File Crowdfund to Challenge Game Restriction Act

One of the issues that is bothering the gaming industry is the accusation that games can cause addiction and other negative impacts. Several institutions and experts have debated this. However, we still encounter negative stigma against playing games. Especially from parents who forbid their children to play games.

Reporting from siliconera, the government of Kagawa prefecture, Japan imposed a new law. Japan’s video game laws will keep individuals under the age of 18 from playing games for more than an hour most days. This was met with opposition from one of the teenagers. A 17-year-old girl named Wataru is trying to crowdfund her lawsuit by hiring a lawyer, Tomoshi Sakka (a well-known lawyer in Japan), to challenge a law that limits how often children should play games.

The video game law of Kagawa, Japan came into effect on April 1, 2020. The most basic element of it limits people under the age of 18 to 60 minutes of video games from Monday to Friday, then 90 minutes of playtime on Saturdays and Sundays. Another element of the law would try to keep children under 15 from using cell phones after 9 p.m. local time and ages 15 to 18 from using them after 10 p.m. local time.

Wataru made a number of statements explaining why he would file a lawsuit. He noted that the rule of law was flawed. “They are based on the premise that games are the cause of things like truancy and game addiction. But it can also be the other way around – truancy can be caused by problems at school, for example, and for some playing games can be the only relief. Wataru also said, “How long children are allowed to play games or use smartphones should be a rule set by every family, not by the government. “

Therefore, this is again a fairly complicated problem. Mainly because rules like this are set based on the prejudice of the negative side of the game and regardless of the positive side. It is hoped that Wataru will succeed in obtaining funds to file a lawsuit against the law.
