The Writer of "The Last of Us Part II" Reveals Why Abby Uses a Golf Stick

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘golf club’? If you’re following anything new about gaming in 2020, chances are one of the things you’re thinking of is Abby from The Last of Us Part II.

One of The Last of Us Part II’s most memorable scenes, and one of the sources of controversy behind the game, is the scene of the death of Joel Miller, the main character from The Last of Us. In this scene, Joel is killed by the new character Abby, with a golf club as a weapon. This scene makes many players sad and upset, especially players who have been familiar with Joel since the first game.

In the midst of this controversy, most players don’t think about why Abby uses a golf club. But, it seems that there is no need to ask again, because the author of “The Last of Us Part II” Neil Druckmann has already revealed this.

In an interview between the Washington Post and Neil Druckmann, Neil said that his game reflected his own youth. To be more precise, the golf club Abby uses is inspired by a childhood moment in Neil, where he was hit in the head with a golf club when he was 16 years old.

“The original plan was for Abby to stab Joel with a knife in the back.” Says Neil Druckmann. “But the knife is more identical to Ellie’s. We wanted Abby to be more different.”

The Last of Us Part II is an action adventure game with a focus on narrative released by Naughty Dog. The storyline in The Last of Us Part II continues Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us, and adds new characters such as Abby. The Last of Us Part II was released on June 19, 2020.

The Last of Us will also get a TV series adaptation, with Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsay as Ellie.
