Warner Bros. Patented Nemesis System from Game Shadow of Mordor

The success of a game can certainly be judged from several aspects such as gameplay, graphics, story, optimization and so on. However, one aspect that is no less important is the presence of features that can distinguish their characteristics from other games. Now, every developer is competing to present a variety of unique features that can provide a different new experience.

This uniqueness is also often the selling point of a game such as the Bullet Time feature in the Max Payne series, VATS in the fallout series, dialogue wheel in the Mass Effect series and many more. So do not be surprised if the success of a feature will be imitated by other developers. This also makes Warner Bros. as publisher from the Middle Earth series patented one of its unique features named Nemesis System.

Through the Game Maker’s Toolkit Youtube channel, Mark Brown stated that Warner Bros. has applied for a patent for the Nemesis system in the game Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War. The Nemesis system itself is a feature where the actions of players will affect the behavior of NPCs. For more details, you can watch the following video.

The legalization of patent rights for the Nemesis system has actually been filed by Warner Bros. some time ago. Unfortunately, the application for legalization was rejected in 2019. However, now Warner Bros. has reportedly re-applied the Nemesis feature patent and is currently in the “Notice of Allowance“. That is, if the document has been received and the fee has been paid, then the patent will take effect immediately.

The legalization of this patent is probably the reason the Nemesis system is very rarely found in other games. Moreover, there are often cases of prosecution of patents in video games. For example, in 2003, Sega sued Fox for using “floating arrow” in the game The Simpsons: Road Rage which is thought to imitate Crazy Taxi. Of course, this can be a lesson for other developers to be more careful in implementing a feature in the game, especially if the feature is inspired by other games.
