Microsoft Will Acquire Dev. Fallout New Vegas - Obsidian Entertainment?

Obsidian Entertainment is an RPG game studio full of talent. This studio is the brains behind Fallout New Vegas, Star Wars KOTOR 2, South Park: Stick of Truth and Pillars of Eternity. The ability of this Californian developer is almost unquestionable when creating complex RPGs, so it’s only natural that there will be times when big publishers want to take advantage of the studio’s expertise.

Microsoft is reportedly finalizing the approval for the acquisition of this independent studio based on 3 sources obtained by Kotaku. One source said that this agreement was 90% complete and it was just a matter of time. When asked for confirmation by Kotaku, Microsoft and Obsidian declined to respond to the news at this time.

If this agreement does happen, it will be a huge success for Obsidian, which for the last 15 years has remained as an independent studio. The studio was on the verge of bankruptcy before being rescued by kickcstarter and Pillars of Eternity. Now this studio relies on the platform crowdfunding For their game projects, they see that there is no publisher who wants to finance their ambitious game development and has never followed current market trends.

The irony of this news is that Obsidian was threatened with bankruptcy because of Microsoft. The Xbox One exclusive Stormlands was canceled in 2012, all of their funds had been spent on the game and they had to turn to Kickstarter for Pillars of Eternity. With the new leader Phil Spencer gaining a positive reputation so far, the same thing probably won’t happen. But that doesn’t mean Obsidian Entertainment will definitely risk their studio falling into the same hole.

Microsoft is reportedly looking to expand their PC gaming sector, so it makes sense for them to acquire studios that are dominant on the PC platform like Obsidian Entertainment. However, this news is still just a rumor.
