7 Common Mistakes PC Owners Still Make Today

Owning a PC is indeed a matter of pride for some people. Especially gamers. They are willing to spend millions of rupiah to assemble the object of their dreams. But not being able to take good care of it will be a big problem for its owner in the future. Sometimes, they blindly believe what people say on social media without researching it further to people who are already competent for PC maintenance issues.

We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.

The result? Your tens of millions of PCs can be short-lived and have to replace components or have to go to a service repairman many times to be reinstalled in a short time. At least a few months to 1-2 years since your PC was assembled. In fact, if you learn from these mistakes, your wallet will not always be owned by irresponsible component sellers who only want your money.

Ironically, the mistake you made is actually a common mistake that often occurs for those who just have a PC on the basis of following the trend or following the words of people who are not necessarily trusted. Including unscrupulous traders and technicians, whose advice sometimes actually leads you astray. So, what are these errors? Here are 7 common mistakes that PC owners still make today.

Disclaimer

This error is a mistake for PC owners, not PC builders. We will not list anything for those of you who are just assembling a PC.

7. Not Reading Installation Options

By reading the installation options, you can get information like this before blindly pressing the NEXT button

Reading is a job that may be boring for some people. But to read this one is something you must do. Because not all programs during installation have the features needed. By reading, then you will know where the software will be installed and not fill your C drive. You will also know whether each of these software has browser add-ons that are not important or not.

6. Not Customizing Windows 10 Start Menu

Example of a large PC Start Menu
This is an example of the start menu on my PC that I have modified. You can delete shortcuts etc. on the right.

Actually this is more a matter of preference. If you have Windows 10 as your OS, then you might be forgetting one important thing that is actually a native feature. One of them is not customizing the start menu. When you press the windows button then you will see the default start menu which is not important at all. In fact, the menu can be dragged and dropped at will. You can even replace it with a game shortcut you like like the image I demonstrated above.

By doing this, you will easily run your software without the need to search repeatedly, or embed the shortcut through the taskbar in the row of start menu icons.

5. No Data Backup

Auto BackupData backup is the most crucial thing when having a PC. This is not because of the problem of how your HDD can be damaged but when your HDD will be damaged. Currently, there are many web/cloud-based backups that you can use to back up your data. Of course, super important data such as thesis will be safer by doing backups. Do it before it’s too late.

There are already many data backup providers that can be used, from Google Drive, MEGA, to Backblaze. Of course, this service is not cheap and is paid monthly, if you want your data to be in the tens of hundreds of gigabytes to terabytes in size safely.

4. Using the Same Password

Password Security SocialHonestly, this is one of the mistakes that I still make in some ways. But not for certain things. Password is the most important password for your activities on the internet. Including internet banking. If the habit of using the same password on each of your accounts continues, it is more likely that your account will be hacked by irresponsible parties.

So how do you make it more varied? Maybe you can use a different combination of each password. For example, your basic password is “handsome and brave man”, maybe you can change it in some accounts to “handsome and brave 123” or something else. Or, maybe you can use a paid app to remember all your passwords on the internet and assign random passwords to each of your accounts that can only be used using that app. For example, Lastpass, Keeper, Dashlane, or others.

3. Not Using UPS

Apc Back Ups Pro Battery Backup 04UPS is one of the most important backups for any PC owner. Unlike laptops that have batteries, PCs need UPS or Uninterruptible Power Supply. UPS is a tool like a power backup battery that allows the PC to stay alive during a power failure.

By using a UPS, you can maintain your PC during a power outage and save your work before it finally shuts down. That way, PC devices become more durable and don’t get damaged quickly. Usually, the device that is often threatened with damage because of this problem is the HDD, especially if your HDD is a cheap version. Trust me, I’ve experienced severe bad sectors on a 2TB HDD that couldn’t be cured at all due to a power outage because I didn’t use a UPS. Love your PC, it’s expensive.

2. Using an Outdated Operating System

Windows XP Home
Are you sure in 2020 you still want to use Windows XP in the office or work that all needs digital?

Security and security issues are one of the super important issues that haunt us all. As we know, Microsoft is the most highlighted company for this problem, because they are the ones who make the operating system or OS for our PCs in general (considering that we use Windows more than Mac). Therefore, your PC’s security and security issues are more or less dependent on them through their respective operating system security updates.

But along with the rapid development of technology, Microsoft left their support for the old operating system. In other words, new threats can infect your PC at any time if you don’t upgrade your OS. In addition, for those of you who like to play games, generally developers don’t want to provide support for their latest games using an operating system that is no longer updated. Therefore, always make sure you use the latest OS every time they release it.

1. Never Update Important Software

Updates 800x350With an increasingly sophisticated digital age, updating is the most important thing that needs to be done. All for the sake of providing you with guaranteed security. At least it can minimize the threat that might occur. Call it viruses, malware, ransomware, or other threats such as hacking. By updating, your PC will have maximum security.

Some important software that needs to be updated include Antivirus, Operating System, to several utility software such as CCleaner and Advanced System Care.

Those are 7 common mistakes that PC owners still make today. Are you still doing it? If so, it seems like it’s time for you to fix those bad habits (including me). Of course you don’t want it if the security of the PC that you have built by saving for years “breaks” just like that and causes it to become acutely ill.
