Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO Game Officially Canceled

First announced in 2019, Amazon confirmed that their MMO-style Lord of the Rings game was officially cancelled. Little has been known of the game since its first announcement, but anticipation and hype continue to soar given the name Lord of the Rings itself. Amazon said that contract problems with development partners – Leyou Technologies were one of the reasons for the discontinuance of the game.

Lord of the Rings was announced as a collaboration between Amazon Game Studios and Hong Kong-based Leyou. However, everything changed after Leyou was acquired by Tencent at the end of last year. To Bloomberg, an Amazon spokesperson said that since the acquisition, Amazon had not received the “green light” to continue development. As a result, cancellation became the main solution.

Information regarding the cancellation of Lord of the Rings was first shared by Bloomberg reporter – Jason Schreier. He first received the information from an anonymous source familiar with the Lord of the Rings project but was later able to officially confirm it through an Amazon representative. It is not known why Amazon chose to cancel completely instead of continuing development alone.

It was also stated that the development team working on Lord of the Rings would be moved to take part in the development of another game.

Amazon itself has had a poor record since establishing their game development division – Amazon Game Studios, 8 years ago. Lord of the Rings is the 5th game they canceled after Nova, Intensity, Breakaway and most recently, Crucible. The only game they’ve managed to release on a major platform so far is The Grand Tour in 2019.

When released, Lord of the Rings is set to be set thousands of years before the events of The Fellowship of the Rings, launching in 2022 and bringing many new, so far unexplored things from JRR Tolkien’s fantasy universe.
