AMD And Cray Together Build The World's Fastest SuperComputer For America

Supercomputers, maybe many of you don’t understand what a supercomputer is. A supercomputer, judging by its name, is a computer that has processing performance above the average of a normal computer, where its performance cannot be compared to the computer in your house, and now America will soon build the fastest supercomputer in the world to be built in 2021. The machine, dubbed the Frontier, will be built by chip designer AMD and supercomputer manufacturer Cray for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. It is expected to generate over 1.5 exaflops of processing power, and will be used for a variety of tasks, performing advanced calculations in areas such as nuclear and climate research. Frontier is said to be able to perform calculations as fast as 1.5 Quintillion per second.

“Frontier’s record-breaking performance will ensure our nation’s ability to lead the world in science that improves the lives and economic prosperity of all Americans and the entire world,” Energy Secretary Rick Perry said in a press statement. “Frontier will accelerate innovation in AI by providing American researchers with world-class data and computing resources to ensure the next great discovery is made in the United States.”

According to the information we got from The Verge, Frontier has to be the most advanced example of what is known as “exascale computing.” This is the next generation of computing capacity, where processing power is measured in exaflops, or trillions of calculations per second. Trillion is one with a whopping eighteen zeros behind it: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

To give an idea of the scale of this kind of machine, AMD says Frontier will have the processing power as many as 160 supercomputers fastest at the moment. It will be able to handle an astounding amount of data, with a bandwidth 24,000,000 times greater than the average home internet connection, capable of processing 100,000 HD movies in one second. It will also have a very large footprint, taking up 7,300 square feet of space (roughly the equivalent of two basketball courts) and containing 90 miles of cable.

The Frontier isn’t the only overseas computer the US is currently building. Earlier this year, the Department of Energy announced a similar project: the Aurora supercomputer, another supercomputer being built by Intel and Cray at Argonne National Laboratory. Aurora is likely to be the first exascale supercomputer in the US, but it won’t be as big as Frontier.

In the World America is not the only one who has a supercomputer that is very fast. For example like China, China is expected to have its own exascale supercomputer and is said to be operational in 2020 a year ahead of America. China is also a world leader in terms of supercomputer volume, and is currently home to 227 of the world’s fastest computers (compared to only 109 operated by the US). Japan and the European Union are other major competitors.

Today, supercomputer chips are mostly in Intel’s hands, and AMD hasn’t supplied processors for supercomputers since 2012, when AMD Opteron CPUs were used to propel the Titan ORNL computer to a benchmark of 17.59 petaflops per second.

Moorhead told The Verge that the Department of Energy likely chose AMD for a number of reasons, including its processor performance, and its recent success in designing semi-custom silicon for Microsoft and Sony. “This bodes well for AMD’s future as this is a technology that should be on the market after 2021,” said Moorhead.
