Best Netflix Movie Recommendation 2021 Themed Gaming/Franchise Game
Have you ever wanted to play a game but was too lazy? You want to watch your favorite gaming content creators but they haven’t updated new content or haven’t livestreamed in the last few days. When something like this happens, Netflix and chill may be one solution, but what to watch?
We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.
On this occasion, we will provide recommendations for movies and game-themed series that are fun to watch. This list is not limited to video game adaptations, but movies/series that have strong themes and references to video games in general. So without further ado, here is the list.
1. Castlevania
Castlevania may be the video game adaptation with the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating to date. This series takes the main topic of the franchise, then builds a world, characters, and stories that are mature, dark, and not one-dimensional.
The antagonist is given a realistic motivation for why he does his actions and the heroes in the story also have a definite purpose as to why they should stop him. The series is still in development and is in season 3. Even if you are not a fan of Castlevania games, this series should still be must watch.
2. The Witcher
Yes, I know that The Witcher was originally a novel and also that this series follows the story in the novel. But let’s be honest, the majority of us know about The Witcher, Geralt, Yennefer, Triss and other characters from the game adaptation of CD Projekt Red. For this reason, I feel it is appropriate for this Netflix series to appear on the following list.
For those of you who don’t know, The Witcher tells the story of Geralt, a Witcher who is basically a mercenary monster hunter with a mutation that makes him shunned by ordinary humans who don’t need his services. Connected by fate, he must protect princess Ciri who managed to escape after her kingdom was invaded by Nilfgaard’s forces.
This series is still in development and is still in season 1 which has problems pacing and also a chronological timeline. However, it is certain that source material that worked on has a fantastic story and I hope the next season can fix the two problems that I mentioned above.
3. Bandersnatch
Bandersnatch has nothing to do with existing video game IPs, but this film is included in the list because of the video game theme and interactions that make it a Telltale game.
Bandersnatch tells the story of a young programmer Stefan Butler who is adapting a book written by his late mother into a game. Initially the development went smoothly and the publisher company was interested in publishing the game when it was completed, but as time went on the development of the game increasingly invited mystery and mental challenges for Stefan. You, yes you, not only act as passive spectators, but are also asked to determine the decisions that must be made by Stefan which will lead to a different ending. This interaction system makes Bandersnatch interesting to watch and can also be re-watched multiple times to see different endings.
4. Dragon Quest: Your Story
Dragon Quest: Your Story is a film adaptation that works on the story of the fifth game Dragon Quest. The film, which was produced by Toho Studio, had received scathing criticism from fans after the character design was far from the original design of the designer Akira Toriyama, but without thinking about it, you will get a film that watchable to spend your time.
5. Atari Game Over
Atari Game Over is a documentary about history video game crash of 1983 where one game makes a video game industry nearly extinct. The game is ET: The Extra-Terrestrial which got a bad reception from gamers.
At that time Atari was so arrogant and believed that the game would sell because gamers were considered too stupid and would buy anything with a well-known brand in the title. However, their expectations were wrong and the unsold cartridges had to be mass dumped in a landfill in New Mexico.
But the film explores more than just unsold game cartridges and trash cans, the game also discusses things like the story of Howard Scott Warshaw, the developer of the game who wasn’t ashamed of his creation because he was only given 5 weeks as opposed to 5 months. most games of the time needed before release. For those of you who are interested in getting to know the dark history of the gaming industry, this documentary is highly recommended.
6. Ready Player One
You may have seen this movie, but for those of you who haven’t, Ready Player One tells an adventure in a dystopian world where the video game OASIS becomes an important part of one’s life. Think of OASIS as a virtual world that exists in Sword Art Online but with properties from video games, movies, and any other pop culture you can think of put into the game.
The main character Wade Watts aka Parzival tries to become the 3 keys to finding the easter egg which is believed to make anyone who finds it take full control of the OASIS. This makes Wade and his gamer friends to fight against large corporations that are trying to find the same easter egg.
Ready Player One is full of video game and pop culture references and for you guys geek, chances are you will be satisfied by this film.
7. High Score
High Score is a documentary series that tells about the development of video games from the 80s to 90s. This series has 6 episodes where each discusses its own topics ranging from the 1983 video game crash like in Atari Game Over, to the console war between Nintendo vs Sega and also the transition to the 3D era.
This series invites many important figures in the video game industry such as John Romero, Nolan Bushnell, Naoto Oshima and others. The series is also narrated by Charles Martinet, who is best known as the voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario and also Paarthurnax in Skyrim.
