Dev. Fortnite Wants to Compete with Steam with Epic Games Store

Not satisfied with the profit-sharing system from Steam, several publishers have recently released their PC games through their own distribution platforms. Giant games like Destiny, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Fallout 76 were not released on Steam at all and can only be played through their respective DRM programs.

Not quite there, Steam will be faced with another new competitor, namely the Epic Games Store – a game distribution platform opened by the Fortnite developers. To compete with Valve’s platform store, which has dominated PC gaming for years, Epic Games offers a larger revenue-sharing system for developers. The Epic Games Store offers 88% of the revenue given to developers, which is quite a bit more than Steam. Steam previously only gave 70% of revenue to developers before they changed it a few days ago to 75% for revenue under $10 million and 80% if revenue exceeds $50 million.

Apart from the profit-sharing system that sounds tempting for these developers, they also provide a big temptation for developers who use the Unreal Engine in their games. Games with this engine do not have to worry about royalties because royalties are included in 12% of the income that goes into their pockets. This means developers with Unreal Engine fully get 88% of the revenue generated from the games they sell. As for developers with other engines, they still have to deal with engine royalties from the results they get.

The Epic Games Store will be released soon by the Fortnite developers and rival game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds could be one of the first games for the platform. Tim Sweeney, the boss of Epic Games, said they had sent an open email asking for the battle-royale game even though there had been a bit of debate between the two games.

Can the Epic games Store compete against not only Steam but also GOG, EA’s Origin, Ubisoft’s Uplay, and Activision Blizzard’s Battle.net? We’ll just have to wait.
