Dev. Indie Predicts Next-Gen Game File Size Could Skyrocket With Unreal Engine 5

The size of game files in the last 5 years can be said to have increased dramatically from the previous generation. Now, gamers are getting used to it when the newest game consumes content storage up to 100GB more. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has now crossed the 200GB mark when downloaded with Warzone mode. With a new generation coming soon, gamers are starting to wonder if the file size will be even bigger or more compressed due to SSD usage.

It seems that the big game file problem won’t improve when the PS5 and Xbox Series X are coming out, at least that’s what the developer from a small studio called Kitatus and Friends. Ryan Shah, the main programmer and CEO of the British studio, said that game file sizes could skyrocket, at least for games with Unreal Engine 5. This is because one of the main features of Epic Games’ new engine is the ease with which developers enter movie-class assets. CGI into the game.

“… I think we already have the technology in Unreal Engine 5 where we can use meshes, textures and stuff like that from the original source, game file sizes are going to skyrocket as a result and give us new challenges.”

Unreal Engine 5 Vr

If Ryan Shah’s prediction is correct, then the limitations storage will be a big problem for next-gen consoles. Both consoles have limited capacity, the Xbox Series X has 1 TB of capacity on their SSDs, and the PS5 has 825 GB. If each game is the same size as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Red Dead Redemption, then the console is only able to accommodate 4-6 games, which of course is small. SSDs are still a “luxury item” today and have a high price, so gamers will certainly hope that developers can optimally optimize their next-gen games.
