DirectX 12: A Forgotten Technology Because It Failed To Attract Game Developers

New technology always attracts the interest of the game industry, game developers are also competing to make the leap as far as possible from existing technology. But it turns out that reality is not always like that, because if we remember the period between 2015 and 2016 then Microsoft touting technology a lot AApplication Programming Interface (API) their newest, i.e. DirectX 12. Offers developers the freedom to develop games library them and offer better and more efficient performance, DirectX 12 or DX12 in fact did not get an enthusiastic response from game developers. Even the majority still choose DirectX 11 as their API.

Then why does this happen? Given that DX12 should appear as a new star to replace the 8-year-old DX11. It turns out that even though it offers various advantages, many developers do not get the benefits when using technology DX12. The majority of cases that occur are the games they work on actually work better and smoother on DX11 than on DX12. Some developers like Codemaster and Ubisoft who have been experimenting with DX12 since 2016 don’t even use it and go back to DX11 for the games they released in 2017 like F1 2017 and even most recently Assassin’s Creed Origins.

It is not too surprising that for now the developers are still not able to maximize the capabilities and benefits of the software DirectX 12. Given the age of this technology is still young. But with the release schedule projects from a solid game developer, it seems to discourage them from taking the risk of wasting their precious time learning this new technology. Difficulties for developers to adapt their projects to real benefit from DX12 Of course, it will make developers hesitate to invest in this technology. They certainly feel better playing it safe and meeting their project deadlines with familiar technologies like Direct X 11, OpenGL, and Vulkan.

I don’t know if there will be a developer who can maximize it DirectX 12 and get other developers to use this technology. Or will DirectX 12 be the biggest API failure ever in the history of video game development.
