Based on data from Famitsu (via Gamesindustry), it was reported that 87% of console sales in Japan during 2020 were Nintendo Switch sales.

3.9 million units were sold for the normal version of the Switch while 2 million units were sold for the lite version. Overall, Switch sales are up 30% annually in Japan. Meanwhile, the PS5 which was just released in November is now gaining very fast momentum. The new Sony console sold 225,000 units while the old PS4 console sold 543,000 units. It is very likely that the PS5 will dominate in 2021 considering the hype for the console is still very high.

For software sales, it’s not a surprise anymore, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became the best-selling game of 2020 in Japan. The social-sim game mixed with sandbox sold 6,378,103 copies. Ring Fit Adventures followed with 1,591,366 copies sold.

From its 2017 release, Nintendo Switch has now sold 68.3 million units and Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 14.27 copies, bringing the game to approximately one-fifth of Nintendo Switch owners in just 9 months.
