Not as Expected, Valve Finally Turns Artifacts Into Free-To-Play Games

Failure in the release of video games is one of the risks that must be borne by the developers. Especially if the product released does not meet expectations, causing losses. In addition, of course, developers must be responsible to the gaming community who have been disappointed in order to maintain the company’s reputation.

This failure seems to befall one of the games developed by Valve, namely Artifact, which is considered not to meet expectations. In order to endure his failure, Valve decided to turn Artifact into a game free-to-play aka free permanently while stopping development of Artifact 2.0.

This announcement was published directly by Valve through its official website. Valve admitted that the release of Artifact was not as expected. Initially, Valve also intended to overhaul the game through Artifact 2.0. However, now the company that owns the Steam marketplace has decided to stop the development of Artifact 2.0 and turn the old Artifacts into games free-to-play which is now called Artifact Classic. Then, Valve also released a beta version of Artifact 2.0 titled Artifact Foundry which can also be downloaded for free.

With the game being free, players can now get all the cards for free. Valve also revoked market integration and wipe the whole system microtransaction so that players can no longer buy card pack. Meanwhile, players who previously bought Artifacts will be given a Collector’s Edition card which can still be sold on the Steam Marketplace.

Then for Artifact Foundry, Valve emphasized that the game is still in the beta stage, aka it has not been developed yet, so there are some aspects that are not perfect. However, it is promised that it will not interfere with the gameplay. Valve also does not plan to update Artifact Foundry in the future.

Artifact itself is a game trading cards which is based on one of the most popular MOBA games, Dota 2. Artifact was designed directly by Richard Garfield who is the developer of one of the card games well-known is Magic: The Gathering. Unfortunately, the existence of his figure cannot help Artifact in achieving success.

The game is also very quiet from players, even very rarely reaches 100 players online at the same time. Mainly due to the game business practice that relies too much on the microtransaction until effective pay-to-win. So with the decision to turn it into a game free-to-play, Valve hopes that Artifact can be better appreciated by its players.
