PlayStation Has the Right to Decide Which Game Will Get Spider-Man

Spider-Man became PlayStation’s full rights in game development.

Announcement that Spider-Man will be a PlayStation exclusive character on Marvel’s Avengers Yesterday was both a surprise and a disappointment. The reason is that Marvel’s superhero will not be present on platforms outside of PlayStation 4 and 5. It makes most fans of the super hero comics disappointed and even intends to boycott the game made by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive.

The drama license is nothing new, especially if you follow the Spider-Man ownership dispute between Marvel and PlayStation or Sony specifically. In case you didn’t know, Spider-Man is now licensed by Sony. Therefore, they are free to make anything related to the spider man. Including the big screen film that they will mix. But ironically this seems to also be applied to video games related to these characters.

Speaking with Comic Book, Scot Amos, head of studio Crystal Dynamics, explained that the decision to release Spider-Man as a PlayStation-exclusive character was due to… Marvel’s Avengers something to do with the relationship between Marvel and PlayStation. Amos continued that PlayStation has full rights to Spider-Man considering that Sony now owns the license, therefore they are free to determine where the character will appear, including their gaming platform.

Sony itself actually only has exclusive rights to Spider-Man in the world of cinema. They don’t have full rights to the characters in the video games. This is evidenced by the appearance of these characters in several games Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and its presence in Switch exclusive games, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

However, if you look at how Amos commented, it seems that Sony wants to suppress their relationship with Marvel and put the PlayStation brand first. Who knows?

Marvel’s Avengers currently slated for a September 4, 2020 release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is also confirmed to be available on the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X platforms later in 2020. You can read our beta preview to see what the game’s surface looks like.
