Ryan Reynolds as NPC "GTA Online" in his latest film

Video game-themed films of course continue to be tried by filmmakers in Hollywood. While some certainly end in failure, some video game-themed movies like Ready Player One, Wreck it Ralph, and even Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle can certainly execute video game themes very well.

And if in the previous films the main character acted as the main character as well as from the game, then in the latest film starring Deadpool – Ryan Reynolds, he will take a different path by taking the point of view of an NPC.

In his latest film entitled Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds will act as an NPC from a “GTA Online”-style game named Guy whose daily duty is as a bank teller in a city that is robbed every day by ‘other players’. Until one day he decides to fight back against the player and makes him realize that he is an NPC in a video game, and that’s where Guy’s new adventure begins.

A film where the character acts as an NPC is certainly nothing new. You must have known that Youtube creators have been exploiting this theme for years with various variations. Creators like Corridor Digital, Rocket Jump, and of course Viva la Dirt even made films with similar themes through their “Epic NPC Man” mini-series. But of course in Free Guy you will find a film with a higher budget, more famous faces, and a story that may be more complex.

Free Guy itself will be released on July 3, 2020 next year and will be directed by Shawn Levy who has worked on Night at Museum and Stranger Things. It will also star Joe Keery who plays Steve in Stranger Things, Taika Waititi who directs Thor Ragnarok, Jodie Comer, and Britne Oldford.
