7 Facts About SOLDIER Final Fantasy VII You Might Not Know

Being one of the most iconic JRPG games of its time, Final Fantasy VII is arguably quite successful in presenting a complex series of stories but epic and emotional at the same time. And the presence of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was released last April, will certainly bring back memories and nostalgia for fans who miss the adventures of Cloud and his friends.

We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.

But on this occasion, I want to talk about the elite military organizations that you meet and even fight throughout the Final Fantasy VII game, classic or remake. Yes, I’m talking about SOLDIER which has a pretty important role in the world that was built in the Final Fantasy VII universe.

Of course we know about the protagonist, Cloud Strife who claims to be a former SOLDIER. Even the main antagonist, Sephiroth himself was also a SOLDIER before becoming the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VII. It’s certainly interesting when these two opposition characters had the same affiliation, and indirectly showed that SOLDIER was not just an ordinary elite military force.

Therefore, it seems interesting if we take a peek at the things that surround SOLDIER in the Final Fantasy VII universe. Here are 7 facts about SOLDIER that you may not have known.

1. SOLDIER is a private military organization

Although there are indeed many SOLDIER scattered in Midgar to maintain security, they are not government-owned soldiers, but a kind of private or private army organization owned by Shinra. In this regard, SOLDIER is more responsive and follows Shinra’s interests and agenda than the public interest.

We really don’t see what form of government Midgar has, except for the Major, Domino who was forced to submit to Shinra. So it can be assumed that Shinra indirectly took over the command of the government for the sake of the sustainability of the company and its ambitions.

2. There are only 3 SOLDIER classes

SOLDIER members only have 3 classes or positions, starting from the highest, namely 1st Class, 2nd Class and the lowest is 3rd Class. Characters such as Sephiroth, Genesis and Angeal are 1st Class SOLDIER, then Zack in the early Crisis Core game has become 2nd Class SOLDIER, not to mention Roche or the Speed Demon who are in 3rd Class SOLDIER.

The three positions can generally be distinguished by the color of their uniforms; The 1st Class wears a black uniform, the 2nd Class wears a red uniform and the 3rd Class wears a purple uniform. Regardless, the 1st Class seems to be given the freedom to modify its uniform, as Sephiroth and Genesis are wearing robes.

Each class certainly has a different significance of the task or mission. The 1st Class SOLDIER will usually only be deployed to carry out missions that are truly dangerous or vital to Shinra. 2nd Class and 3rd Class SOLDIER usually have missions that tend to be no different; deployed simultaneously, assisting the 1st Class SOLDIER and Shinra Peacekeeping Troops missions.

For the record, it’s unclear whether SOLDIER candidates have to be part of the Shinra Peacekeeping Troops first. In the classic Final Fantasy VII, shown Flash back where Cloud states that he didn’t succeed in becoming a SOLDIER and is just an ordinary lowly soldier for Shinra.

3. SOLDIER members are not ordinary people

Although it looks normal in the game, all SOLDIER members are actually not ordinary humans. In addition to undergoing military-style training in general, all SOLDIER members are ‘required’ to be exposed to Mako energy which makes them stronger and able to move faster than ordinary humans.

In the game, there are dialogues that say that Cloud has a ‘beautiful’ sparkling eye color. The color is the effect of exposure to Mako’s energy and is arguably a very normal thing to happen to SOLDIER.

4. All SOLDIER members can do Limit Break

Still a little related to the previous point, due to exposure to Mako energy, genetic strengthening and special treatments, all SOLDIERs can generally perform Limit Breaks, where SOLDIERs can release even greater power, usually when under pressure but don’t give up in battle. .

The Limit Break concept itself was technically only introduced in Final Fantasy VI. In classic Final Fantasy VII, we can see Cloud performing an Omnislash attack, or in Crisis Core where Zack is able to imitate the abilities of the enemies he has fought.

5. Members of SOLDIER are subjected to secret experiments

Apart from being a bouncer for Shinra, SOLDIER members are also often used as experiments for various experiments. You may know professor Hojo as one of the antagonists of Final Fantasy VII, where he is the spearhead of the experiments that occur in Shinra, especially regarding SOLDIER and JENOVA.

For example, Sephiroth and Genesis who became the strongest SOLDIER at that time were the result of experiments involving JENOVA cells. Likewise with Cloud and Zack in Crisos Core, where after the Nibelheim incident, Professor Hojo made the two of them the next experiment related to Jenova for 4 years. As a result of the experiment, Cloud is paralyzed when Zack tries to save him from the laboratory where they are being used as experiments.

In the online mode of Dirge of Cerberus, there is also a SOLDIER resulting from an inhuman experiment with the name The Restrictor. Armed with a Gunblade, The Restrictor briefly became leader of Shinra’s Deepground division before being taken over by Weiss and Tsiviets.

6. Turks are not part of SOLDIER

Shown as a group of people dressed neatly while leading the SOLDIER troops or the Shinra Peacekeeping Troops, Turks is not really part of the SOLDIER organization.. Turks can be said to be Shinra’s intelligence division, where his own duties include surveillance, reconnaissance, espionage, kidnapping and even killing. However, Turks is also tasked with finding potential SOLDIER candidates.

In general, Turks members are not stronger than SOLDIER members, because Turks members themselves do not undergo the process of being exposed to Mako exposure or genetic strengthening. However, of course we can see Turks members like Reno and Rude have unusual abilities that might overwhelm you against them.

7. SOLDIER in Final Fantasy VII event is in weak condition

In the Crisis Core story, there were many rebellions due to Genesis defecting because he knew how rotten Shinra was who did experiments on him. The SOLDIER members who felt that they too could be used as experiments eventually defected and joined Genesis to wage war with Shinra.

In Final Fantasy VII, you may notice that there are more Shinra Peacekeeping Troops than the SOLDIER members we fought. This of course also shows that there are no SOLDIER members who look unique besides Roche, it is not even mentioned whether Shinra still has 1st Class SOLDIER after Sephiroth and Genesis defected, as well as Angeal and Zack who died.
