Branded Racist by Western Media, "OK" Gesture Removed from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

In the middle of season 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare released a major update that added Warzone’s player capacity to 200 players as well as some other new content. What players don’t realize is that one of their favorite gestures in the game, the “okay” gesture, has been removed from the game.

There is no official explanation from Activision or Infinity Wards for the removal of the gesture but it is most likely because the gesture has often been linked as a symbol of white supremacy in recent years.

Initially just a joke from the 4chan forum, the okay gesture as a racist symbol was taken seriously by the western political media, and has now become a hand gesture that carries a bad message in people’s eyes even though the context is not like that.

The removal of the gesture provoked a negative reaction from many players. According to them, Infinity Ward took an excessive decision and actually made the gesture known as a racist gesture by throwing it out of the game because of misconceptions from the western media.

The removal of this gesture can be counted as one of Infinity Ward’s actions to fight racism in their game, especially after the Black Live Matters protests. Previously the game had more stringently moderated usernames and language that had racist contexts.
