ITS Campus Holds Its First Virtual Graduation Using Minecraft
Many events have had to be canceled or postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Or at least have to switch to an online way or online in its implementation. This is also what many students who graduate this year have to do but have to do all the procession online from their respective homes.
We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.
However, to enliven the online graduation, one of the campuses, namely ITS (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember) Surabaya still broadcasts all graduation processions through its Youtube channel like graduations in general. What is unique and funny is that the virtual graduation procession is carried out using the Minecraft game.
You can see it for yourself at minute 22:25 of the video above where the shape of the Graha ITS graduation building is made in the form of Minecraft, and all graduation processions generally begin to enter the building, walk and climb the stage to take their diplomas, move their toga straps, and finally walk out. There is even an interaction with the rector
The Minecraft graduation simulation itself was carried out by a team from the ITS Informatics Engineering Department using the Minecraft Education Edition which was already subscribed to by the campus. Led by lecturer Hadziq Fabroyir, 14 people in the team made a virtual building from the ITS Graha building to enliven the graduation which was supposed to be held last March.
Actually, his team had a lack of references regarding the shape of the building because no one really remembers how it looked in detail and it was impossible to survey the location during this pandemic. “Finally, we put together the construction of the house in Minecraft based on the pictures we collected from the internet,” said Hadziq.
In the implementation of the simulation is also carried out directly when the Graduation event is held. Communication between players who join the Minecraft ITS Graduation process is done through Discord. Zoom only accepts video feeds from OBS Virtual Camera which are transmitted from Minecraft ITS servers.
Even so, the simulation through Minecraft is only done for the opening. While the next graduation ceremony will be held without Minecraft but still digitally where the name of each graduate will still be called one by one with a photo of the student displayed.
This certainly opens a new perspective that video games can be used for many things. Including as a means of simulating meeting each other with more intuitive control and interaction than just a telephone or video call. What do you think the game will do next?
