Quake Champions Will Be Free-to-Play, But Players Are Given the Option to Purchase "Full-Game"

Bethesda and id Software is reviving this franchise with Quake Champions, but different from the previous series, this Quake will be filled with “Champions” with different abilities like the Overwatch or Paladins games. With a system like this, people start to think if this game will be made Free-to-play not to be ignored seeing Overwatch still dominates the shooter genre like this among premium gamers.

Creative director of Quake Champions, Tim Willits confirmed to Polygon that the game will be free-to-play with players being given access to one character, “Ranger” for free, the rest can be purchased with the Champion Pack which costs a full-price game.

The reason they chose this method is because they know a lot of Quake players who just want to play their Quake without spending a dime like in Quake Live. And with Quake Live having almost the same business model, it seems that the gaming community will not be disappointed in choosing the game to be “Free-to-play” but at the same time “For-pay”.

The Willits team explained that Free-to-play players will still get the entire map and will fight in the same bracket. The difference between them and premium players is that they are limited by only one champion. But seeing Quake games are always about reflex skills and accuracy, the limitations of champions don’t seem to be so deterrent to free players.

Free-to-play players can still access other Champions via in-game cash items called “Favors”. With this Favor, players can play other Champions within a certain period of time. You could say you “rent” the Champion, but you don’t spend real money in this game and only have money in the game if you are curious to try other Champions outside of Ranger.
