Get to know DotR Redux - Yu-Gi-Oh! The DotR We've Needed

Previously, I wrote an article about Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses. In that article, I wrote about the storyline and gameplay system of Duelists of the Roses (DotR) which made the game, in my opinion, the most unique digital card game to date. Until now, I have never found a digital card game, both online and offline, with a gameplay that is quite close to this old school game. However, this game has its own problems.

We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.

For those of you who are still playing Yu-Gi-Oh! until now, maybe you guys feel that Konami. not very good at balancing their own games. The same problem can be seen in DotR. When you understand how to play DotR optimally, this game becomes very easy — too easy, in fact. There are very few parts of DotR that are challenging, and that challenge comes from having overpowered cards that players can’t use.

Grinding in DotR is also a big drawback. In DotR, the enemy’s Deck Leader generally has certain skills. To get the same skill, players must increase the rank of Deck Leader. The rank of the Deck Leader can be raised by using the same monster as the Deck Leader as often as possible. However, this grinding process was very, very slow, taking hours just to acquire one skill.

Of course, in the gaming era like now, any game can be repaired with mods, especially old games that can be played via emulators. However, unlike Forbidden Memories, Duelists of the Roses does not have a modder community that actively issues dozens of mod variations. Fortunately, a DotR lover on behalf of Clovis is willing to start a DotR mod project with the title DotR Redux.

As the title says, DotR Redux is a great mod that completely changes Duelists of the Roses. Recognizing the many problems with DotR, Clovis created the DotR Redux project with the aim of making the DotR experience even better, and retaining all the positives already in the game.

This is done with three major changes. The first is a change in grinding to get the Deck Leader skill. All additional EXP in DotR Redux is multiplied by five from the original DotR. In addition, in Custom Duel mode, a map is added that is intentionally designed for grinding Deck Leaders. With these additional features, the grinding process that initially took hours can be completed in just 30 minutes.

The second is a change in the Reincarnation system, and a slot machine at the end of the duel. As already written above, one of the difficulties and sources of frustration in DotR gameplay is the “cheat” AI, using cards that players can’t get at all. DotR Redux solves this problem by adding these cards to Reincarnation and slot machines. Therefore, in DotR Redux, all cards can be obtained by the player.

The last issue fixed in the DotR Redux mod is balancing. In this section, DotR Redux changes the entire DotR campaign in a big way. All AI is given a new deck, and a more unique and challenging stage design. Each AI deck is not only strengthened, but also focused on one type of monster, thus having greater synergy with their Deck Leader. Each level was redesigned to support AI decks.

This opportunity was also used by Clovis to design a stage that was more creative, and required strategy and out of the box thinking. One of my favorite stages in this mod is the duel against Darkness-ruler, where our Deck Leader is locked in the Labyrinth, so the Deck Leader can’t move, but also can’t be attacked directly.

In addition to the big changes above, DotR Redux also brings small updates to bring a fresh DotR experience, such as a new Fusion formula, and a new selection of starter decks with a greater focus on one particular type. Overall, DotR Redux is a mod that fixes the weaknesses of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses, and retains all aspects of DotR that have worked well.

I would like to say a big thank you to Clovis and his colleagues who have made this mod a reality. Clovis uploads videos about DotR regularly on his YouTube channel, which can be accessed via the following link.

DotR Redux can be downloaded via this link. Instructions for playing DotR Redux can be found in the description of the video trailer above.
