Playstation Classic Turns Out to Use the PCSX Emulator to Run Games

Since the arrival of the NES Classic from Nintendo, many console makers have fallen into the same trend. The release of a mini console containing dozens of classic games is a premise that is almost hard to resist by today’s old gamers on the basis of nostalgia. Sony doesn’t want to lose to this trend and releases their own mini console, the Playstation Classic

Quoted from a review from Kotaku, they mention that Playstation Classic uses an emulator that may not sound foreign to you, namely PCSX. For those of you who don’t know, PCSX is a popular PS1 emulator for PC. Seeing the emulator is a program open source, then Sony does not take any legal action at all for the use of the emulator. It’s just a little funny that big companies are using fan-made programs that PC gamers have been using for nearly two decades for their premium mini consoles.

What’s even more interesting is that Sony has sued the developer of the emulator. After failing to win the case, they decided to buy an emulator license just to stop the development progress.

There’s nothing wrong with using emulation on this kind of mini console. All existing mini consoles use basically the same method, from Nintendo’s NES Classic to AtGames’ Sega Flashback. It’s just that the emulator program used is usually developed by the company itself.

However, don’t let this stop your interest in nostalgia for PS1 classic games via Playstation Classic. Mini consoles like this are sold in limited quantities and it never hurts for you to collect them before they are no longer produced.
