Resident Evil Revelations 2 (PC) Review

Resident Evil… Yep, who is now being said to be experiencing crisis genre because many protested about Capcom’s decision to mix “a few” action elements in the game, for example, Resident Evil 5-6. Well, time passes on and Capcom released Resident Evil Revelations 2 this past February. We all have probably heard a lot that the first Revelations received quite warm reviews from gamers, especially previous fans because it is more “closer” to the horror element than RE titles that have appeared recently. So, can Revelations 2 be able to beat its predecessor? Or more importantly, is it enough to save RE’s identity? here’s what I thought after completing the game!

We are now officially on the platform Tiktok! Follow our Tiktok account at @gamebrott.com to find various information and our other interesting video content.

PLOT

Barry’s back!

Revelations 2 is taken from two perspectives, namely Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield’s younger brother who is now a member of the NGO TerraSave and Barry Burton (yay!) who has been absent from RE for a long time who now serves as an advisor to the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance). Their adventure is also accompanied by 2 support characters, namely Moira Burton, daughter of Barry and a little girl named Natalia Korda who has the ability to feel the existence of BOW and has an even darker past. The initial story of Revelations 2 begins with Moira & Claire who are at the TerraSave recruiting event after which mysterious forces enter the party and kidnap everyone to the island to be used as experimental material for The Overseer, the main antagonist. After hearing this news, Barry went alone to the island and there he met Natalia.

After it was first announced that it would take place in a prison located in the middle of an island in the middle of nowhere, many gamers started being negative with the excuse “Not creative! Copycat Code Veronica!” but after experiencing it myself, it turns out that it’s not that bad, even more than I expected. In fact, I think Capcom dares to take a new step in story development. Because the plot here seems darker and more mysterious, plus The Overseer seems to have a more sinister purpose. It feels different from most of the previous RE plots which seem more “clear”. Each episode is divided into 2 campaigns, Claire & Barry, and the further the episode goes, the more twists and cliffhanger endings each episode makes that make players wonder and guess what really happened between these 2 timelines. And it’s true, as soon as you reach the final episodes everything starts to become clear and immediately feels like a “Complete Story”.

Really cool plot experience and for some players it might be really beyond their initial guess, nicely done! Several minor conflicts are also included here, such as the family conflict between Moira & Barry and Natalia’s past, which all play a role in the overall plot of this game.

Minor conflicts that support the overall story, nicely done!

Gameplay

“The Afflicted” one of the main enemies in Revelations 2

The gameplay itself is quite satisfying. Here Capcom offers a “Partner Zapping” system similar to RE Zero where we can freely switch between characters. Each of them has a role, Claire & Barry in the offensive section, while Moira & Natalia in the defense section, but that doesn’t mean Moira & Natalia can’t participate in the offense. Moira has a flashlight with the crowbar that can be used to stun enemies while Natalia can throw bricks and she has the ability to sense the enemy’s presence and also their weak points. The cooperation between the characters also seems satisfying.

For example, the player can stun the enemy with Moira’s flashlight first then switch back to Claire to launch a Melee Attack, then switch again to Moira for a finishing attack using a crowbar. Meanwhile for Natalia & Barry, Natalia can see some weak points of the enemy and the player can switch again to Barry for finishing moves. There are even some enemies that only Natalia can see!

Think you know where to shoot? Think again….

And for gamers who are disappointed with RE6, don’t worry, we won’t suddenly turn into a black belt sensei here. Limited melee moves and one more cool element that Capcom introduced is Stealth. Players can crouch and sneak out of the enemy’s area or players can sneak behind the enemy and finish off the enemy by finishing stealth moves. A new element, but it feels satisfying because believe it or not players will often be faced with situations where they need Stealth. One problem, the enemies in Revelations 2 seem too easy to kill.

Especially “Rotten” a zombie-like creature in Barry’s campaign. But some enemies also seem intimidating and need cooperation between characters as well to be killed. Like “Glasps” & “Revenant”

Revenant, a combination of several corpses combined with a virus.

Raid Mode

Raid Mode is back! And players are given more opportunities for customization this time! Now weapons can be shared between characters and skills are divided into two for each character. Namely Passive and Active. The new system is “inherit” where players can “inherit” maxed out skills to other characters. Even after the player reaches Lv 100 for one character, the player can still get skill points and can still level up his skills. Coupled with the support from RE.net which sometimes holds Online Events.

The winner of the event will get various bonuses such as gold that can be used in the store, and free weapon parts! Raid Mode this time also has its own plot. Here it is told that The Overseer is conducting its latest AI (Artificial Intelligence) Test, namely Red Queen Alpha. We will start the game as a “program” that can take the form of any character in the game. We start the game from a room called “The Vestibule” where we can access what we need for Raid Mode. Such as Store, Change Character, Launch Mission, and others. for me? Raid Mode is highly Replayable!

The Bad(s)

Some points that I think are lacking in this game:

  1. The duration per episode is too short.
  2. Graphics are not so “pretty”
  3. Online Co-Op only in Raid Mode

Final conclusion, I think Revelations 2 is a masterpiece! Story is well executed! and the gameplay is quite close to the elements of survival horror. And this shows that Capcom is trying to listen to the fans’ complaints. Maybe next time, Capcom can improve in terms of graphics because after seeing RE5 & 6, some gamers might be a little surprised…..
